Twelve-year-old Max knows the King wants him dead. Born with his heart outside of his rib cage, Max is abandoned at birth by his father and raised by a kind witch who sacrifices all to keep him safe from the outside world. In time, Max’s father ruthlessly ascends to the throne and becomes the most feared king in history thanks to The Black Cup’s evil powers. When he learns that the baby he abandoned years ago still lives, and is now nearly a man, the King orders his troops to find and kill Max so that his rule will go unchallenged by his own blood. Rather than run away from the danger, Max embarks on a journey toward the city to seek his father and prevent further destruction of the kingdom and its people. That’s where the witch, the King, and Max are set on a collision course. The world they have known, and the lives they have lived, will be changed forever.

Join Us for Summer Reading at Susan Heim on Parenting

I work at a library, and Summer Reading is one of our biggest programs of the year! The goal is to keep kids (and adults!) interested in reading throughout the summer, especially when school has ended. Some kids need a steady stream of good books to prevent "summer slide," where they may lose their enthusiasm for and progress in reading. With classes being held virtually this spring, it's even more important that children not fall behind and are ready to tackle their studies in the fall.

With that in mind, I'll be featuring lots of books for kids, 'tweens and teens to encourage them to keep reading this summer. (Look for the banner above on each post.) I also encourage you to seek out your local library to see what Summer Reading programs are being held this summer, even if they're more virtual than usual. As for adults, make sure you set a good example for your young readers by being a reader, too! I've always got great recommendations on my other blog, Susan Heim on Writing, so be sure to check them out. Or ask a librarian what he or she is reading!

Ditching the Screens Will Help You Open Up Your Creativity, by Sasha Olsen, Author of "Legends from Mom's Closet"

Hello everyone! My name is Sasha Olsen, and I’ve lived on the beach in Florida since I was a just a baby. I have many hobbies, like ballroom dancing and playing piano. I also love to read, write, and draw. They’re some of my favorite things to do! I just released my first book Legends from Mom’s Closet, and I’m excited to share more about it and how I came up with my project. Since we’ve been stuck at home for a while, we should definitely be thinking about how we can use our imaginations to keep busy.

Reading about and dressing up as legendary people is how I spent my last rainy summer indoors, and it seems like that’s exactly how I’ll be spending this one, too! Starting this project taught me so much. Not only did I learn about these legends, I learned a lot about what it means to work on something you love. My tips for you all are to read and do research on things that you are interested in. For me, I love reading biographies, which is how I ended up as these legendary women.

One of the best ways to find out what you love is by reading about different topics. I’ve read about scientists, models, actresses, and so many people from all types of careers. Then, I thought how cool would it be if I spent a day in their shoes and learned even more about their lives? Dressing up became my favorite thing to do, mostly because I could get creative and look for unique things. Good thing my mom let me dig in her closet for them!

It was also really important that I could use what was around me because I’m always thinking of ways that we can help take care of our environment. There is no need to buy new things or go to the store! Especially because nowadays we’d rather not even do that.

It’s easy to think that if we’re bored then we should just spend our time on our technology, but I think that it distracts us from opening our creativity. If you’re bored, I challenge you all out there to find something new to do. Hopefully, reading my book inspires you. I wrote this book to show other kids that we can do so much with our time especially with our family’s support.

You can check out my book on my website and Amazon, as well as other platforms. I also continue my project on my Instagram where I post about these legends and new ones that I learn about and dress up as!

Sasha Olsen is a 10-year-old author, environmental activist, ballroom dancer, bookworm, pianist, and enjoys anything artistic. She always finds new hobbies and things to do, which usually ends up in her trying to juggle everything. She lives with her family in Bal Harbour, Florida, where she also spearheads the conservation movement “I Want My Ocean Back.” Legends from Mom’s Closet is her first book.

In Legends from Mom’s Closet, 10-year-old Sasha Olsen documents how she spent a rainy summer indoors using her creativity and imagination. After reading a stack of books about women like Frida Kahlo, Audrey Hepburn and Billie Holiday, Sasha’s imagination ran wild and she ended up in her mom's closet picking through her clothes and her grandmother’s vintage pieces to dress up like all the female legends she had been reading about. Complete with photos of the looks she created and tips for other young girls on how they, too, can emulate these iconic women, Legends from Mom’s Closet will inspire readers to delve into the lives of truly remarkable women from the past to learn a thing or two about what it means to be legendary in today’s world.

Grace's Ghosts
by Stephenie Wilson Peterson
Genre: Middle-Grade Fantasy

Twelve-year-old Grace and her feline best friend, Midnight, have a secret: Midnight is a ghost. But then again, so are the rest of Grace's friends.

Since she's the only person in hundreds of years with the ability to see them, the many ghosts of Tansy have flocked to Grace since birth. She doesn't mind. She prefers the company of the dead to that of the cliquey kids at school.

Grace is happy with her strange life, until one day, the ghosts tell her about the secret her town has hidden for centuries. There's a reason there are more ghosts than living people in Tansy. Three hundred years ago, a lonely witch cast a spell that mistakenly trapped the soul of every person to ever set foot in the tiny town. So when the spirits beg her to find a way to break the curse, Grace is eager to help.

As she searches for answers, Grace makes discoveries about the secret her family hid for generations and a world of magic hidden in her own backyard.

Grace soon realizes that if she succeeds in breaking the curse, she'll lose Midnight and all of her ghost friends, but if she fails, everyone living in Tansy will face the same fate. Can Grace break the curse before it's too late?

Blog Tour and Giveaway: "The Colossus of Roads," a Middle-Grade Book by Christina Uss

The Colossus of Roads
by Christina Uss
Publisher: Margaret Ferguson Books
Release Date: May 5, 2020
Genre: Middle Grade, Young Adult, Fiction

Eleven-year-old Rick Rusek is determined to improve the traffic conditions in Los Angeles. His parents' failing delivery catering service, Smotch, depends on it.

"Traffic is a puzzle with one correct solution. And I've got to solve it!"

Rick has been studying maps and traffic patterns for years, and devises solutions to improve Los Angeles' notoriously terrible traffic that he calls his Snarl Solutions. He has big ideas, but not enough resources -- until his artistic friend, Mila brings him to a Girl Scout meeting.

Every week at Miss Diamond's art studio, the scouts paint recycled traffic signs with their own designs. The signs will be hung all over Los Angeles to beautify the city with art. But Rick, The Colossus of Roads, has ulterior motives.... He will restore the signs to their original glory and find a way to install them strategically to rectify the traffic. Anything can be hung with duct tape!

But of course, it's not that easy. SPLAT (Stop Poor LA Traffic), BLAM (Bike-Loving Amazing Mamas), and the TCD (Traffic Calming Division) have their own methods of curing the city's dilemma and will undermine Rick's efforts however they can.

Will Rick be able to clear the notorious traffic problem on Sepulveda Pass in time for his parents to deliver Polish food to the movie studio and land the catering contract they need to keep their company afloat?
