Review and Giveaway: Satellite Girl and Milk Cow (3 Winners; US and Canada)

GKIDS and Shout! Factory have announced the release of the charming fantasy/science fiction romance Satellite Girl and Milk Cow on Blu-ray/DVD on June 5, 2018.

This debut feature-length film from Korean director Chang Hyung-yun, acclaimed creator of animated short films that have premiered and won prizes at festivals worldwide, was produced by Cho Young-kag (The Fake, The King of Pigs), and received an Asia Pacific Screen Award nomination for Best Animated Feature.

About the film:
An out-of-commission satellite picks up a lovelorn ballad on her radio antenna and descends to Earth to find the source of such sincere emotions. But, on the way, she is caught in a raging magical battle and transforms into Satellite Girl, complete with rocket shoes and weapon-firing limbs. Meanwhile, the balladeer in question -- a loser twentysomething at a café open mic -- meets the fate that befalls all broken-hearted lovers: He is turned into a farm animal. But love knows no bounds, and aided by the wise and powerful Merlin -- a wizard who has been turned into a roll of toilet paper -- our duo must evade the all-consuming incinerator monster, the wily pig witch, and other nefarious adversaries in an attempt to be together.

Bonus features include the short film, Coffee Vending Machine and Its Sword, and trailers.

Review: Satellite Girl and Milk Cow
by D.T.

Satellite Girl and Milk Cow is a clever little cartoon from Korea. The adventure begins when KITSAT-1, a satellite that has been taking pictures and audio recordings of Korea at random, breaks down and is reactivated years later when she hears a sad love song that stirs her heart. She must meet the singer. She heads toward the planet, only to accidentally be caught in a magic spell from the powerful, toilet-paper-roll wizard Merlin and turned into a metal girl. Meanwhile, the lovesick young man, Kyung-chun, has suffered the fate of a broken heart and been turned into an animal: a Milk Cow. As an animal, Kyung-chun is the target of three major forces: the Incinerator who is trying to eat him, the liver snatcher who is trying to do just that, and the Pig Witch who is trying to recruit him. Satellite Girl and Merlin both seek out Kyung-chun. Satellite Girl wants to protect him, and Merlin wants to use him as bait for the Incinerator, whom he plans to defeat and save all of the broken-hearted.

Altogether, this is a silly story with toilet-paper magic. It is full of romance, both lost and discovered. It teaches tolerance, as Milk Cow is sadly and wrongly forced to hide because he is an animal, and Satellite Girl is dismissed as crazy despite telling the truth that she is, in fact, a satellite. It has humor for all ages, some potty jokes and slapstick humor for the kids, and some strangely self-aware jokes for the adults. It even has some scary close calls with the Incinerator and the liver snatcher. It is a fun and curious tale for all ages.
