Napping Princess: Review and Blu-ray/DVD Giveaway

About "Napping Princess":

From visionary director Kenji Kamiyama (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Eden of the East) comes a sci-fi fantasy that effortlessly weaves together the rapidly evolving technology of today’s world with the fantastic imagination of the next generation, which was nominated for Best Animated Feature – Independent, at this year’s Annie Awards.

The year is 2020, three days before the opening of the Tokyo Olympics. While she should be studying for her exams, Kokone Morikawa often dozes off, entering a dream-world called Heartland full of fantastic motorized contraptions. But when her father, a talented but mysterious mechanic, is kidnapped for stealing technology from a powerful corporation, it’s up to Kokone and her childhood friend Morio to save him. Together they realize that Kokone’s dream-world holds the answers to the mystery behind the stolen tech, uncovering a trail of clues to her father’s disappearance and ultimately a surprising revelation about Kokone’s family.

With an ambitious mix of multilayered action, whimsical characters and inventive machines, "Napping Princess" is a genre- and universe-blending film that shows that following your dreams is sometimes the best way to discover your past. Suitable for Kids 9+.

Review of "Napping Princess" by D.T.

"Napping Princess" is a movie that definitely comes from the heart. This little story has two faces: On one side, a normal girl is facing a family disaster that has been years in the making. On the other, there is a fantasy kingdom facing destruction from a monster. Kokone, our main character, is the hero of both, though she doesn't know it. In the real world, Kokone must save her father from a corporate nightmare that she never knew he was involved in. In the Kingdom of Heartland, she must use her unique, technological magic to escape her confinement and save the kingdom despite its stubbornness. What Kokone slowly comes to realize is that the two worlds are connected, in more ways than one. What she does in Heartland, in her dreams, affects what happens in Japan in her real life. Not only that, but Heartland has been shaping her life and answering her questions long before she even knew it.

This may sound like whimsical nonsense, but the story is really just about a girl living her day to day life and getting mixed up in her parents' and grandparents' problems. It takes place in 2020, just before the Olympics are to begin in Japan, and has an interesting anchor in reality. In a way, you almost feel as if you are watching future history. Heartland is only in her dreams, and though it seems ridiculous that her dreams would affect what happens in the real world, it is mostly ignorance and Kokone's hope that magic is guiding her that creates these coincidences. The movie is heartfelt, and you wonder what familial problems may have inspired the renowned writer and director, Kenji Kamiyama, to dream up this dreamland. He deals with the pain and confusion of losing a parent in a very real sense, and how that can have more of an effect on the surviving parent than on the child at times. Although it isn't apparent at first, he also answers every question you have, though he lets you ponder those questions before answering them. Somehow, he also finds time to cover corporate politics and greed, without making it feel as if he's pushing an agenda. Finally, he covers the bonds between family members, and how that can recover even after years of damage. It all comes together to make you think hard about what happened, and leaves you happy with the results.
