In Select Theaters and On Demand: "I Kill Giants"! Giveaway for a $25 Visa Gift Card and the Graphic Novel!

This post is in partnership with RLJ Entertainment.

I KILL GIANTS – In select theaters and On Demand

From the acclaimed graphic novel comes an epic adventure about a world beyond imagination. Teen Barbara Thorson (Madison Wolfe, The Conjuring 2) is the only thing that stands between terrible giants and the destruction of her small town. But as she boldly confronts her fears in increasingly dangerous ways, her new school counselor (Zoe Saldana, Guardians of the Galaxy) leads her to question everything she’s always believed to be true. I Kill Giants is an intense, touching story about trust, courage and love from the producers that brought you Harry Potter.

Based on the acclaimed graphic novel by Joe Kelly and Ken Niimura
From the producer of Harry Potter, Chris Columbus
Academy award-winning director, Anders Walter

Watch the trailer!

Although I haven’t seen I Kill Giants yet, I’ve been told that this film features strong women and powerful female characters with an almost entirely female cast. It touches on themes of bullying, standing up for yourself, and finding strength within yourself. If you are a woman, have you ever felt undervalued? When I was growing up, I was known in school as the smart kid. Now that may not seem like a burden to many people, but in my small high school, the cheerleaders and athletes were valued most highly. Being pretty and peppy made girls popular. Girls like me weren’t valued for their talents. It didn’t help that I’m an introvert, someone who doesn’t seek the limelight. I can’t say that I was bullied, but I was ignored -- unless someone really wanted the answers to an assignment. It was a very lonely time. As an adult, I had to do a lot of work on myself to figure out it was okay to be me, and that I shouldn’t be ashamed of being smart. So, I’m anxious to see this movie in the hopes that it will show other girls and women that it’s okay to be who they are, not how others tell them they should be.

Meet the Characters!

I Kill Giants is in select theaters and On Demand. Find it on iTunes.

Fill Your Family’s Easter Baskets with These Books from National Geographic Kids Books! (GIVEAWAY; $75 Value)

It’s hard to resist filling up those Easter baskets with chocolate, jelly beans and Peeps, but be sure to include a few items that will last a lot longer than candy! Books are a great way to keep the spirit of Easter alive all year ‘round and avoid the post-Easter sugar rush. National Geographic Kids Books has several new titles for kids of all ages that are perfect for Easter and Spring. I have always been a HUGE fan of National Geographic Kids Books because they’re not only educational, but they’re filled with vivid, colorful photos and words of wisdom. Check out these books for consideration this Easter:

Somebunny Loves Me by Parry Gripp
hardcover picture book, ages 4-8

Parry is an Emmy-winning singer-songwriter whose quirky, popular tunes, including “Nom, nom, nom” and “It’s Raining Tacos” have made his YouTube channel a smash hit with nearly 140 million views. He is an avid animal lover and his bunny Bruno is often the inspiration behind so many of his songs. In Somebunny Loves Me, Parry’s sweet and silly rhymes are cleverly written to share how children can best understand, appreciate and interact with a variety of fuzzy, feathered or scaly pals. Paired with adorable, full-page photographs, Parry also includes a personal note in the back of the book giving kids and their parents more tips on how to be good pet owners — from how to keep pets safe, clean and healthy to how to best interact with them and even pointers on on how to make a pet music video. Check out the Somebunny Loves Me music video and sing along as you and your kids turn the pages (hopefully with their favorite pet by their side!):

Susan’s favorite part: The music video is adorable! Kids (and parents) will want to watch it over and over again.

Who's Who in the Bible
hardcover, ages 8-12

Everyone you need to know from the old and new testaments! From Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden to Paul's ministry to the ancient world, this beautiful book pairs need-to-know information about biblical personalities with timeless artwork. Each vibrant, colorful profile is accompanied by fast facts, including which books of the Bible the person appears in and what he or she is best known for. Feature spreads cover the history, archaeology, and geography associated with notable individuals. An alphabetical index covering more names not mentioned in profiles ensures that kids reading the Bible never have to ask, "Who's that?"

Susan’s favorite part: The beautiful artwork really catches the eye, and an index makes it easy to find just about any name from the Bible!

A Seed Is the Start
hardcover picture book, ages 6-9

Spring is about to, well, spring into action, and the magical seed is where it all begins. Beautiful photography and lyrical text pair with comprehensive picture captions in award-winning author Melissa Stewart's story about the surprisingly diverse world of seeds. Learn all about the plant cycle, from how seeds grow, the fascinating ways they travel, and what it takes for a seed to become a plant. The magic of spring, revealed!

Susan’s favorite part: Read this book, and it will inspire you to plant seeds with your children or students and watch them grow!

100 Ways to Make the World Better!
paperback, ages 8-12

Who says kids can't change the world? If they've got the will, Nat Geo Kids can guide the way, with doable activities, hands-on projects, advice from National Geographic explorers, interviews with experts, weird-but-true facts, and more inspiration. In keeping with the Nat Geo Kids mission, the book is full of practical, positive, and powerful ideas that every kid can consider, from simple acts of kindness to creative adventures to good-for-the-planet projects. Ideas are presented as simple concepts with engaging graphics and photographs, and many are followed by detailed supporting information. Kids get a sense of their own power to make a difference and an understanding of what actions contribute to positive outcomes. Sometimes all it takes is starting with something simple, and before you know it, together we've reshaped our planet for the better.

Susan’s favorite part: This book has tips for everyone, from the simple, such as “Teach someone how to do something you know how to do well” to ones that require greater effort, such as “Walk to fight disease or support a cause.” Anyone can find some great ideas in this book!

Now on Blu-ray and DVD: "Same Kind of Different as Me" ~ Let It Inspire You to Spread Kindness!

I recently watched the movie, "Same Kind of Different as Me," and all I can say is "Wow!" This film, based on a true story, will surely inspire you to do some good and have compassion for the less fortunate.

About the movie: Based on the New York Times best-selling book, and recipient of the Dove Foundation seal of approval for ages 12+, "Same Kind of Different as Me" follows successful art dealer Ron Hall (Greg Kinnear) and his wife Debbie (Renee Zellweger), who seemingly have the perfect life. But when their faith and family are tested, an unlikely bond with a homeless drifter (Djimon Hounsou) leads them on a remarkable journey that forges an everlasting friendship. "Same Kind of Different" as Me shows how a simple act of kindness can change everything.

This perfectly cast film shows how a family who has everything when it comes to wealth realizes that they have nothing when a secret rocks their comfortable world. Wife and mother Debbie realizes that her family must go after a different kind of success. And while her husband Ron is resistant at first, he soon discovers that Debbie is right when he befriends a homeless man whose life seems hopeless. Watching this movie inspired me to also read the book, which I am enjoying even more than the movie because it really delves into the life and feelings of Denver, the homeless man, giving more backstory as to why he ended up on the streets. I would recommend that you watch the movie and read the book to learn about this remarkable group of people who crossed class lines to realize that everyone is the "same kind of different" as everyone else.

Fortunately, "Same Kind of Different as Me" is now out on Blu-ray and DVD! The Blu-ray version includes more than an hour of behind-the-scenes bonus content. Or you can purchase a digital version of the movie at

When I received a copy of the movie for review, I also received a Kindness Rocks Kit, which is an amazing project to do with your family! The idea behind this project is to collect rocks and paint inspirational messages on them. Then leave the rocks somewhere that they will be found by someone to brighten their day or give them to someone who could use a little compassion in their life. Check out the Kindness Rocks our family created:

When I showed them to a friend, she immediately begged for one to put outside her front door. She said it makes her smile every time she goes out or heads to work. It's a reminder of how fortunate she is and that her attitude can make or break her whole day. We also left rocks in a park, in the yard of a neighbor who has experienced struggles, in front of a church, and by a bus stop. Most of the rocks are gone now, and it is my hope that someone took them home to be inspired daily, just like my friend has been. I hope you'll give this project a try. Get the whole family involved! Promo Blitz and eBook Giveaway: "The Gorilla Picked Me!" by Michele McAvoy

Children’s Picture Book
Date Published: Spring 2018

 photo add-to-goodreads-button_zpsc7b3c634.png

Olive felt ordinary. Always last to be picked for teams at recess and never a Valentine placed on her desk. Olive blended in. Until one day at a daddy-daughter dance, the dancing gorilla picked her from the crowd!

He scooped her up and twirled her around the dance floor. Olive's soul sang! THE GORILLA PICKED ME! is a fun, sentimental story that reminds little girls that they are all worthy of attention. No little girl is ordinary!

About the Author

Michele McAvoy is an award-winning children's picture book author. Her debut picture book, MY SUPERHERO GRANDPA, received a 2016 Moonbeam Children's Book Award. Michele grew up in a small town in northern New Jersey until she moved to New York City where she attended NYU and law school. Michele enjoyed the crazy, busy, single life of New York for over 15 years until she got married and had her first child.

With a small one-bedroom apartment and a baby that did not sleep, Michele moved back to her small hometown. She settled back to her roots and traded in the noisy city streets of NY and extra dirty martinis at trendy bars for manicured lawns and backyard BBQs. When she's not being a lawyer or a mom, Michele writes uplifting, whimsical stories to help children understand and respect their emotions. You can see more about Michele and her books at
