Word Up! Season 7 of WordGirl Kicks Off on August 4 on PBS KIDS ~ Let’s Celebrate with a Giveaway!

Get ready to embark on electrifying, brand-new, word-fueled adventures when WordGirl, the Emmy Award-winning animated TV series from Scholastic Media, makes its Season 7 debut, Monday, August 4, on PBS KIDS (check local listings)!

The new season begins with a week of five “brain-ier” than-ever episodes -- each inviting kids to join WordGirl and her friends as they fight the “cheesy” tactics and dastardly tricks of local villain Dr. Two Brains, while learning new vocabulary words all along the way! To help keep kids’ minds in gear and their vocabularies growing all summer long -- and to get them set for all-new word-driven hijinks -- here are some tips inspired by WordGirl’s Word of the Month for August: CLEVER!

Find the word! Turn reading into a fun game for your child! Host a reading-based scavenger hunt and ask them to find the nouns, adjectives, or rhyming words in a book. And, before embarking on your road trip this summer, give your kids a list of words and challenge them to check off each one as they spot it from the car window.

Solve the puzzle! It’s important to keep your child’s mind working, especially during the summer months, and one super way to do it is by working on logic puzzles together. Purchase crossword puzzles and word search books, find free printable puzzles online -- or even create your own!

Make it a reading challenge! Reading is rewarding for kids of all ages. Create a log of the books your child reads this summer. During the school year and all year long, continue to track the titles your child completes. For each book they finish, reward them with a special sticker. Add to the challenge by asking them to pick out a word they don’t know from each book they read and look it up together in the dictionary. See how many books they can read -- and new vocabulary they can learn -- in just one week or month!

Spell it out! Throwing a mini spelling bee into the mix is a great way to test your children’s spelling ability. Say a word and ask them to spell it out. Then, go around the home, the park or the supermarket asking them to spell each item you point out!

And don’t forget to tune in to Season 7 of WordGirl, August 4 on PBS KIDS (check local listings) for more word-powered fun!

Moshling Rescue Is Now Available for Android!

I'm a huge fan of Match-3 games, and I don't have an iPhone or iPad, so I was excited to hear that Moshling Rescue is now available for Android! Mind Candy, maker of Moshling Rescue, calls this the "first Mind Candy game targeted to the moms and dads of the company’s millions of young fans." In the game, players must match the gummies to rescue the Moshlings while exploring hundreds of adventure-packed levels. When the going gets tough, players can purchase boosts and extra lives to enhance their entertainment. Moshling Rescue has six game modes:

Home mode – Collect specific gummies to move the Moshling across a game-style track to reach home.
Boss mode – Big Bad Bill tries his best to prevent players from reaching their goal.
Dig mode – Explode and select gummies to dig further down the screen to complete the level.
Drop mode – Rescue the Moshlings by dropping them down through a big stack of gummies.
Clear mode – Everything is covered in gloop! Match over it to clean it all away.

FuzzyHeads: Perfect Pillows for Kids and Travel!

We’re going to be taking a long road trip for our summer vacation. I’m so excited to get to our destination, but I’m not looking forward to those long hours in the car. With two ten-year-olds along for the ride, I know I’m going to hear a lot of “Are we there yet?” “When can we stop?” and “My brother’s bothering me!” One way to alleviate the whining in the back seat is to make sure that the kids are as comfortable as possible. Fortunately, I found out about FuzzyHeads!

FuzzyHeads come in three sizes (9-, 16-, and 24-inch) and many colors. They are perfect for use as travel pillows when kids are on a long trip, whether it’s by car, train, bus or plane! Each FuzzyHead even comes with a fun name and its own bio. For instance, my son’s FuzzyHead, Red Randy, has the following characteristics:

Red Randy from Mesquite comes from a long line of rodeo legends. When he was a little FuzzyHead, Red Randy would sit on a bale of hay and pretend he was riding a bull. One year, his grandpa took him to the Texas State Fair where he got to ride a mechanical bull. His grandpa who had been a rodeo legend in his day knew that Red Randy had the potential to become one of the top young bull riders. “I really enjoy going to the stockyards in Ft. Worth.” My Dream: Become a veterinarian.

FuzzyHeads also make fun additions to sleepovers, campouts, or just everyday snuggling. My son loves his FuzzyHead, as you can see below.

We are super-excited to take Red Randy along on our road trip. I know my son will be much more comfortable in the car and will love having a fuzzy friend come on vacation with us! I hope you’ll check out FuzzyHeads at Visit FuzzyHeads on Facebook and Twitter, too!

You Are (Not) Small: Children’s Book Review and Giveaway!

Title: You Are (Not) Small
Author: Anna Kang
Illustrator: Christopher Weyant
Publisher: Two Lions/Amazon Publishing
Publication Date: August 5, 2014
Ages/Grades: 2-6/Grades Pre-2

Have you ever noticed that everything looks different through a child’s eyes? To a child, adults look BIG, but to adults, children look SMALL. That’s the premise that runs through the simple but joyful picture book, You Are (Not) Small. Two fuzzy creatures and their pals insist that it is the other creatures who are different … the bigger creatures say that the others are small, while the smaller creatures say that the others are big! Suddenly, a gigantic foot steps between them and settles the argument once and for all: Compared to him, they are ALL small! And when some teeny creatures parachute onto the scene, suddenly all of the other creatures are big! It’s all a matter of perspective.

This adorably illustrated picture book will delight children with its colorful pictures and the opportunity to shout “Big!” and “Small!” as Mom or Dad read along! And the story aids parents and kids in discussing the differences -- and various perspectives -- as to what is considered big and small in children’s lives. Does your child think that his bed looks big? Well, compared to his parents’ bed, it’s really small! You Are (Not) Small is lots of fun to read and talk about together at bedtime.

About the Illustrator and Author:
Christopher Weyant’s work has been published worldwide in books, newspapers, magazines, and online. His cartoons are in permanent collection at The Whitney Museum of American Art and The Morgan Library & Museum in New York City. Anna Kang received her MFA from USC’s School of Cinematic Arts. YOU ARE (NOT) SMALL is their first children’s book; they are currently at work on a sequel. They live with their children in New Jersey.

Anaiah Press is revealing the trailer for OPERATION TREE ROPER: AN EYE ABOVE by Robert Polk today, and we have it here on Susan Heim on Parenting!

About this book:

Twelve-year-old Declan Parker was born with only one eye, but all he seems to have trouble seeing in proper perspective is himself.  All he wants is for kids to see him as normal before he starts a new school in the fall. To that end, he sets out to make money helping with his dad’s tree care business.

Unfortunately, when his dad lands in the hospital after a climbing accident, Declan’s surgery hopes are wrecked. His only hope remains in a neighbor girl and her uncle, a wounded army veteran. Can they help him save his dad’s business, or will Declan’s once-courageous drive turn into total despair?

Operation Tree Roper: An Eye Above is a well-crafted story about a strong, dauntless young man who redefines the value of self-reflection. Declan is a character you won’t be able to forget.
