Heading Back to School with Master Lock!

It may be summertime, but in just a few short months, the kids will be heading back to school! As a member of the Master Lock Live Secure Safety Squad, I’m already thinking about what kinds of Master Lock products and other items my children will need when they return to the classroom. Many children, especially those who are heading into middle school or high school, will be getting a locker for the first time, so be sure they have a Master Lock padlock to keep their items secure. And if your kids ride their bikes to school, you’ll want to secure them with a Master Lock bike lock. To help you get ready for school, I’ve prepared a fun video below that shares some of the items you might want to pick up this summer!

Disclaimer: As a member of the Master Lock Live Secure Safety Squad, I have been provided with compensation and products to aid in providing my opinions and information about Master Lock. All opinions are 100% my own.

Summer Must-Read iPad Mini Giveaway Event

When it comes to summer reading, indie authors offer a refreshing alternative to predictable plots from big name writers. Here’s a list of ten titles from emerging indie authors. Pick your favorite and vote on Facebook HERE

As Iraq teeters on civil war, and climate change becomes more obvious every day, ELECTED imagines another history of the 21st Century … one with gasless cars, but without the war in Iraq -- in a book readers are finishing in one sitting and starting over again.

More About the Book

“The style was fresh, the writing slick and fast-paced, with witty dialogue and delightful details that gave realistic characterization and narration. Travis’ creative liberties added an original kick, but did not stray so far from what happened in history to make it seem like two different Americas. The progression of the novel was noteworthy, I like the way the characters develop and change throughout the period of time that elapsed. One of my favorite things about the novel was the international scope, which still plays a huge part of American politics.”

Special Must-Read Price Cut: E-book was $5.00 and is now .99 cents!

Every book on our nation’s recent financial collapse strives to explain how it happened. Vile Acts of Evil explains why, and why every American should pay very close attention.

More About the Book

"The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off."  Gloria Steinem's glorious adage appears in the Preface of Michael Kirchubel's Vile Acts of Evil: Banking in America for good reason: This work is certain to anger you because the truth is far worse than anything you could have ever imagined. Vile Acts of Evil is the worker's guide to the history of American banking. This is the real story of money, greed, and power in America. The book's format is unique: quotes from newspapers, historians, economists, bankers, and political figures drive the story line and alternate with Kirchubel's insightful, clarifying commentary. The result is a lively and surprisingly captivating conversation on the true, unseen causes of our nation's major calamities: the recessions, depressions, panics, wars, foreclosures, and bailouts. This is a totally new analysis of our American economic and political history, from colonial times to today, complete with simple recommendations for preventing further calamities. Vile Acts of Evil is truly a modern-day Rosetta Stone, a powerful, interpretive, clarifying lens through which all historical, economic, and political works must now be reviewed and every American's comfortable, well-worn political convictions re-examined."

Special Must-Read Price Cut Price is currently $20.66, which is 10% off on or $9.99 on Kindle.

"Just when I thought I had figured out what comes next, JD Young throws a curve that I never expected and could not wait for more -- it is wicked good reading."

More About The Book

"Young does a very good job telling a well-rounded story; giving you bits and pieces, hints of connections here and there, but not enough for you to figure things out until he wants you to. I very much enjoyed this book and look forward to reading more from Young, and I hope this is only the beginning of Simon's story!"

Special Must-Read Price Cut: E-books are .99 -- regularly 2.99 -- paperback signed by author $4.99, regularly $10.00 (order from the author for discount)

If your favorite activity in the summer is to be with a captivating book, curled up under the beach umbrella or on the mossy rock by the river or anywhere that is alone, then this summer's list will surely include William Kenly's The Dogs of Luck: Comic Confessions from Warren PA, Corporate America and Family Life.

More About the Book

"Kenly is a writer; he's got that mysterious thing analogous to perfect pitch. Kenly's writing flows with the natural ease of a conversation with an old friend. His story unrolls with its own momentum. (Kenly) did a great job of capturing and holding my attention. I enjoyed reading about life growing up in Pennsylvania. The Boy Scouts, the river, the Christmas trees all seemed so familiar to me. There are so many things that we could do as kids that no one would get away with now. I also enjoyed reading about 'life in corporate America' (particularly things I never knew about the men's room) and I loved, loved, loved reading about the adventure to Russia. I felt I was right there in with him. The chapter 'Sign Posts on the Journey' was one of my favorite chapters. It was a magical, wondrous chapter full of wisdom and insight. So much was said in that chapter in a simple and profound way. The book is a sophisticated mixture of happiness, sadness, beauty, comedy, and philosophy that grabbed at my emotions and brought me to many different levels at the same time. I strongly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in reading something that is light and funny in some parts while, at the same time, provides you with food for thought. A+++"

Adventures Unfold With the Question: “What if…?”

More About the Book

Raised in the forest alone by his father after a series of misfortunes turned their family’s life upside down, Robert’s life experience isn’t typical. But now, at the age of thirteen, it’s time for him to go out into the wider world. With only his native intelligence and the wisdom his father has imparted to him, Robert entered the American lifestyle in 1969. Always guided by his father’s principle that when faced with a difficult decision, he should stop and ask himself “What if…?” Robert navigates a world full of people whose motives are less than pure, and finds friends who will last a lifetime. Follow Robert from the wilderness of Colorado to the wild side of Woodstock; from the back of a VW van to a safe haven with a family he never expected; from rags to riches; and from living outside the world to finding a secure place and identity for himself. Colorado to Woodstock and Back will prove to you, as well as to Robert that “if” is at the center of “life”!

Keep Your Family Hydrated and Healthy This Summer with 989 OnDemand Beverages

My boys spend a lot of time outdoors, and you can imagine that it gets pretty hot here in south Florida. Last weekend, we spent 7 hours out in the hot sun for a swim meet. That’s why it’s important for them to stay well-hydrated. Soda and sugary drinks are NOT a good choice. But I recently discovered a healthy, all-natural option: 989 OnDemand. This on-the-go beverage is fun for kids because it keeps vitamins, minerals and electrolytes in an air-sealed cap until you’re ready to drink. Twist the cap, and all of the colorful nutrients flow into the clear liquid, creating a fun stream of color! Best of all, 989 OnDemand tastes good, but it has zero calories because it’s 100% naturally sweetened with Stevia.

Here’s the low-down on 989 OnDemand:
  • Contains 9 essential vitamins: C, B1, B3, B9, B7, B2, B6, B12, B5
  • Contains 84 ionic minerals: Including selenium, manganese, iron
  • Contains 5 electrolytes: sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, zinc
  • It’s 100% natural with 0 calories, 0 carbs, 0 fat, 0 cholesterol, 0 sugar
  • Comes in 6 flavors: Punch, Grape, Orange, Lemon Lime, Pomegranate Blueberry, Kiwi Strawberry
In other words, 989 OnDemand is a great option for making sure that your whole family stays hydrated and gets the nutrients we need when we’re sweating it out in the hot sun this summer. And your kids will love the fun cap and delicious taste. (Mine do!) I hope you’ll pick up some 989 OnDemand today. Learn more at Visit them on Facebook and Twitter, too.

OpenEd: A Free New Resource Providing the Largest Catalog of Educational Content for Teachers, Parents, and Students

Let’s say your child is having trouble learning multiplication. You want to find some entertaining videos and resources that will help your child learn, but Googling “multiplication videos” turns out to be more complicated than you thought because you have to screen each video, determine if it’s appropriate for your child, and save a list of those you like. Or, instead of spending hours doing this, you can head on over to! At OpenEd, they’ve already done the searching for you on thousands of topics relating to math, reading and more. All of the resources on their site have been “teacher-approved” and even sorted into categories based on the Common Core Standards.

I had the privilege recently of speaking with Lisa Blum, co-founder and VP of Marketing and Product Management at OpenEd. Like many valuable resources, she and her husband developed this site based on their own personal frustration in finding learning materials for their son. Their research bloomed into the development of OpenEd, which now contains more than 120,000 videos and 80,000 educational games, which are searchable by keyword, grade and Common Core Standard. They’ve even developed a learning management system (LMS) whereby teachers can personalize their own “class” on the site, which they can then pass on to their students and parents for additional learning. OpenEd is also valuable for home-schooling families, tutors, and fighting the summer brain drain. As Lisa told me, her son watched one or two videos a day one summer, and he enjoyed it so much that he didn’t feel like he was being given extra homework.

OpenEd is a valuable resource both for teachers and parents. It’s just getting launched, so it will be growing and expanding even more in the future. And an iPad app is coming, too! Summer is a great time to help your children stay focused on learning, look ahead to the concepts they’ll be learning the next year (which will help build their confidence in the classroom), and develop lesson plans and curriculum for upcoming classes. Visit OpenEd at today.

BBQ Made Easy with FRENCH’S Flavor Infuser Marinades! (GIVEAWAY)

Woo-hoo, it’s barbecue season! What could be better than a delicious meal cooked on the grill?! And just in time for grilling season, FRENCH’S has launched its new Flavor Infuser marinades. They’re unique because you inject the marinade right into the meat! It’s fast and easy. Best of all, it tastes amazing!

FRENCH’S Flavor Infuser marinades come in four flavors: Sweet & Tangy Teriyaki, Classic Steakhouse, Zesty Italian, and Caribbean Jerk. We recently used the Sweet & Tangy Teriyaki on chicken, and it was fantastic. Here’s the recipe:

Sweet & Tangy Teriyaki Chicken
Credit: Reckitt Benckiser
1 3.5 oz tube FRENCH'S® FLAVOR Infuser™ Sweet & Tangy Teriyaki
4 lbs. boneless, skinless chicken breast

Unscrew tip of infuser, remove seal, and replace tip.

Inject tip into chicken, lightly squeeze tube while slowly removing. Repeat evenly over entire breast; repeat for each breast. Pour any remaining marinade on top.

Let stand for 10 minutes to allow flavor to infuse in chicken. Grill or bake 20 minutes or until no longer pink in center.

So easy and so delicious! This was a huge hit with everyone in our family. We can’t wait to try the other flavors. You can use the marinades on chicken, steak, pork or fish. Just snap the cap, inject the tip, and squeeze! No messy plastic bags, pouring, soaking, etc. And they’re only $2.99 apiece. Head over to to learn more about FRENCH’S Flavor Infuser and find great recipes and coupons. “Like” them on Facebook, too. Happy grilling!

Two lucky winners will each receive all four FRENCH’S Flavor Infuser marinades, plus a complimentary BBQ mitt! To enter, simply fill out the Rafflecopter form below. This giveaway is open to U.S. residents only and will end at 11:59 PM ET on Wednesday, July 10, 2013.

Find the Largest Selection of Sports Fan Apparel Online at Prep Sportswear!

With four sons and a husband, you can bet there is a lot of sports-watching in our house! Baseball, football, basketball, hockey, golf … these sports and more are on our TV practically on a daily basis. So, purchasing some sports apparel for “my guys” is always a huge hit! When you’re trying to find the perfect gift for the sports fan in your life (and perhaps that’s you!), head on over to Prep Sportswear online. I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say they have the largest selection of sports fan apparel around! I was stunned at the selection they have available. I even found logos from my children’s elementary school and their previous preschool. Amazing! They have college teams, pro teams, Greek and military logos, and even vintage designs!

Best of all, you get to customize your shirt style and design. For instance, here’s how I did mine. Our family has season tickets to the football games at Florida Atlantic University, so I wanted a new shirt to wear to the games. First, I entered “Florida Atlantic University” into the Search box on the home page. It came up with four choices: Men’s T-shirts, Men’s Sweatshirts, Women’s T-shirts, and Women’s Sweatshirts. I selected Women’s T-shirts. There were 32 styles to choose from! And the selection was even bigger because many of the styles come in a variety of colors. I could also narrow my search by price, brand, material and more. I picked my style of shirt and was given a selection of 6 different color combinations, along with 21 different logo options. It was so much fun to try various color and logo combinations together because they show you right on the page what they will look like together so you’ll know exactly how your new shirt will look. It was a tough choice, but I finally selected the red and white shirt above.

Isn’t it awesome? I love the high quality of this shirt and the brilliant color. I can’t wait for football season to begin so I can show off my new shirt at the games! (Of course, I’ve been wearing it anyway because it’s so cute.) The next time I want to buy sports fan apparel, I’ll be heading over to Prep Sportswear. Their options are nearly endless, and you’d be amazed at the many teams, schools, and organizations that are represented (even international). Visit them today through the links below.

John William and the Bandits of Basswood Book Blast: Giveaway for a $50 Amazon Gift Card or PayPal Cash

John William and the Bandits of Basswood
We already know Alexander Drake’s story. His father, John William, started it all years before when he entered Azra’s Pith. This is his story. John William was born an explorer, just like his dad before him. His adventure really began with the worst year of his life. He lived every day in misery until his twelfth birthday. He set out to turn things around and find his smile again. A new friend gave him an invitation he could not turn down … follow me and change your destiny. He never imagined being captured by bandits and taken to a ship riddled with river rats was part of his fate. Not just any bandits -- the Bandits of Basswood -- known to be a ruthless and wild crew of thieves. Trying to escape would be a ridiculous idea. No one has ever escaped and lived to tell about it. Someone should have mentioned that to John William before he snuck off the ship. The chase out of Basswood was on. He took a chance to change his destiny and ended up on a wild ride to save his life.

Author Elizabeth Parkinson-Bellows
Being the frizzy-haired tomboy with buck teeth gave me a slight case of shyness as a kid. A colorful imagination meant escape and adventure at the drop of a hat.

Over the years, I learned that the insecurities I carried around were a waste of time. I still prefer a football game to a manicure any day of the week. That indispensable imagination has found its way into my writing, providing a sense of joy and a true purpose.

Children’s Book Review and Giveaway: Zoe’s Room (No Sisters Allowed), by Bethanie Deeney Murguia (3 Winners) #ZoesRoom

I grew up with one sister (who was younger than me by just 11 months), and we shared a bedroom until we started middle school, so I could really relate to the new children’s book, Zoe’s Room (No Sisters Allowed), by Bethanie Deeney Murguia. It’s about a little girl who loves to play pretend games in her room after bedtime, but they’re suddenly put to a halt when her little sister moves into her room! Now Zoe’s after-hours block-stacking, tea parties and star-gazing wake up little Addie, and her parents aren’t happy! Will Zoe ever be able to do the things she loves in her room now that little Sis is sharing it? The adorable video below provides a sneak peek at this book:

This is a wonderful story to read to little siblings who must share a room, especially if they’re having trouble adjusting. Parents can use it as a springboard to start a discussion about sharing, compromise, and boundaries. And, lessons aside, it’s a sweet tale with lovely illustrations (also by Bethanie Deeney Murguia) that will delight young children. A perfect bedtime read!

I hope you’ll pick up a copy of Zoe’s Room (No Sisters Allowed), along with the first book in the series, Zoe Gets Ready. Learn more about these books and author/illustrator Bethanie Deeney Murguia at

CLICK HERE to visit Zoe’s official site and download fun activity sheets!

About the author: Bethanie Deeney Murguia earned an MFA in Illustration from the School of Visual Arts. Bethanie lives with her family and her fifty-pound lap dog, Disco, in Sausalito, CA. She is the creator of Zoe Gets Ready and Buglette, the Messy Sleeper.

Three (3) lucky winners will receive BOTH Zoe’s Room and Zoe Gets Ready, by Bethanie Deeney Murguia. (Prize pack valued at $33.98) All prizing courtesy of Scholastic. This giveaway is open to US addresses only and will end at 11:59 PM ET on Monday, July 8, 2013.

Bedtime Math: A Book Launch, Giveaway, and Pajama Party!

Let’s face it: When you ask kids to list fun activities, you’re highly unlikely to hear them mention “math”! Unfortunately, math has gotten a bad rep in the past. But Laura Overdeck, a mother and trained astrophysicist, is on a mission to get people excited about math. Her national non-profit organization, Bedtime Math, wants to make nightly math problems as common as the bedtime story. And part of that effort involves the release of a new book called Bedtime Math: A Fun Excuse to Stay Up Late.

Every activity in Bedtime Math is designed to be fun! For example, the first chapter is called “Exploding Food.” (That’s sure to get kids’ attention!) One of the activities is called “Playing Ketchup.” It talks about struggling to get ketchup out of a glass bottle (something we can all relate to), which is why the plastic ketchup squirt bottle was invented. Of course, kids aren’t encouraged to squirt ketchup in bed, but they can read about it, look at the fun illustration by Jim Paillot (showing kids playing with ketchup) and then answer the accompanying math question according to their age (Wee ones, Little kids, Big kids). For instance, the “Big kids” question asks: If you squirt 2 cups of ketchup, and each cup used 14 tomatoes, how many tomatoes’ worth of ketchup did you just squirt? Kids will be giggling over the thought of squirting ketchup!

Check out this video for a sneak peek at Bedtime Math:

In addition to Exploding Food, other fun chapters include Wild Pets, Extreme Vehicles, Sports You Shouldn’t Try at Home, and Really Odd Jobs.

Reading a story at bedtime has become a childhood tradition. Let’s do the same for math and make problem-solving a nightly ritual, too! It’s easy to do with a copy of Bedtime Math: A Fun Excuse to Stay Up Late. I hope you’ll pick up a copy for your family! CLICK HERE for more information.

Attend a Bedtime Math Pajama Party!
During the week of June 24-30, 2013, libraries and bookstores across the country will be celebrating the release of Bedtime Math: A Fun Excuse to Stay Up Late by hosting Bedtime Math Pajama Parties! These fun events give families a chance to take part in the national movement to make math a fun, relevant, and enjoyable part of everyday life. These free, family-friendly events are aimed at children ages 3-8 and their parents, and will include a variety of math-inspired games and activities. Children are encouraged to come dressed in their pajamas and be ready to play! CLICK HERE to find out if there’s a Pajama Party near you! Please call ahead or contact your library or bookstore for more information -- some parties may require a reservation.

One lucky family will win a hardcover copy of Bedtime Math: A Fun Excuse to Stay Up Late, by Laura Overdeck! To enter, simply fill out the Rafflecopter form below. This giveaway is open to U.S. residents only and will end at 11:59 PM ET on Sunday, July 7, 2013.

Ideal for Summer Reading: TIME FOR KIDS’ Big Book of Where

It’s important to keep our children reading over the summer, but it’s easier said than done. With the warm weather, camps, friends, swimming, sports and more competing for their attention, they don’t want to sit down and immerse themselves in a long novel. That’s why the TIME FOR KIDS' Big Book of Where is perfect for summer reading. It’s divided into nearly 80 short features, just the right length for daily reading. Each two-page spread answers a fascinating question, such as:

Where do the most germs hide out?
Where did Columbus first set foot in the New World?
Where was the first FIFA World Cup played?
Where were LEGO bricks invented?
Where is the longest railroad in the world?
Where is Africa splitting apart?
Where were the first “bungee jumpers”?
Where did an iceberg the size of Connecticut break free?
Where did the Titanic sink?
Where does the solar system end and outer space begin?

Children can spend 15 minutes a day reading one or two features. And they’re so fascinating that they won’t even mind that they’re learning something, too! My boys and I like to read the Big Book of Where together and make it into a game. For example, I’ll turn to a page and ask them, “Where is the world’s busiest subway system?” Then they compete with each other to get the right answer! After we’ve found out the answer (Tokyo, Japan; no, New York doesn’t even rate in the top 5), we’ll read more about it and look at the pictures. For instance, did you know that there are so many people trying to get on the Tokyo subway during rush hour that they actually hire “pushers” (called oshiya) to squeeze people in? Amazing!

TIME FOR KIDS’ Big Book of Where is ideal for children ages 8-12 and is divided into 10 chapters (the 7 continents, plus Space, The Oceans, and Home). Visit for more information and pick up a copy to get your children reading this summer!
