Teaching "Never Quit" at a Young Age, by John Croyle, and a Giveaway of His Book, "The Two-Minute Drill to Manhood"!

Adapted from THE TWO-MINUTE DRILL TO MANHOOD: A Proven Game Plan for Raising Sons (B&H Publishing Group; May 2013), by John Croyle. All rights reserved.

Parents give their children an immeasurable character trait by teaching them that commitment is a choice, and so is giving up.

Teaching “Never Quit” at a Young Age

It’s not hard to imagine a six-year-old boy sitting on the floor with his Legos spread out all around him. As a parent, you come in the room and ask him to put them away, and you hear the universal whining, “Aw, Mom!” Then the child just halfheartedly gets the job done. When you turn your back, he leaves, giving up on the project. He gave up on the chore you gave him. He quit. At that point, you have a choice: you can pick up the toys yourself, or you can call the child back and make him complete the task. An even third option might be, “Hey, look, let’s do this together.” You’ve required him to get back on task, but you’ve helped him, as you required him to finish the task.

What’s going to happen when the child is a bit older and is working on a science project? Again, you will get to choose to what degree you will help. Notice I said “help” them with it, not “do” it for them. By requiring them to finish tasks at an early age, you prepare them for when they face those tough things as a teen. If you train them well at an early age, as teens they will walk in and say, “Dad, Mom, can you help me with this? I’m stuck, and I can’t figure this out.” There is a difference between seeking advice so they can finish the project themselves and asking you to do it for them. It’s important that you start them on the right path on a small scale when they are young.

What Quitting Looks Like

There’s not a person in the world that did not shudder when they heard the story about the Italian Captain of the Costa Concordia cruise liner that ran aground. The captain of the ship left the boat before he should. He indicated that he was in a rescue boat directing rescue efforts. Meanwhile, the Italian Coast Guard ordered him several times to come back onboard so that he could tell them how many passengers needed to be rescued. He kept saying back to the Coast Guard officer, “I don’t know. You tell me.”

The captain of the ship had a choice, to be the captain of the ship or to abandon his responsibilities and be a coward. At least thirty people died as a result of the accident.

Too many parents pretend to be the captain of the ship, yet they are sitting in the lifeboat hoping everything works out OK. If you are in the lifeboat and you are blind, or if you are thinking everything is OK when deep down inside you know it’s not, you need to get out of that lifeboat, crawl back onboard, and climb back into the captain’s chair, even though the ship is on its side. The ship will never be righted unless you resume your responsibility and sit in the captain’s chair.

Things to Do

1. Look for age-appropriate projects around your house that you and your child can start and finish together so your child learns the principle of not giving up when a project gets tough.

2. Teach your child this mantra, “Do it right, and don’t start what you can’t finish.” Once you start, you finish no matter what it is, be it your marriage, your parenting, a backyard patio, or replacing tires on a car. You have to finish what you start. The greatest gift you can give your child is an example of not giving up and the expectation that they will finish what they start.

3. Set the expectation of fulfilling a commitment. If your child joins a sports team and halfway through the season decides it just isn’t what he or she wants to do, require that they finish what they started. It can be a great lesson in being responsible.

4. If your child plays a game and keeps the commitment even when he or she isn’t feeling 100 percent, that is when you go out for ice cream and say, “I’m proud of you for not giving up and playing even when you didn’t feel well.”

Focus Is Crucial

Not everybody can play football. Not everybody is built for the strain, the rigors, the pain, or the frustration. Not everybody is a Heisman trophy winner, and not everybody is going to be a superstar.

Few people can truly identify with being a football player without having been there. They don’t understand what it’s like to have a cracked rib or to hurt so bad you can’t even breathe. Few understand what it’s like to hold your left elbow against that broken rib trying to make it not hurt so bad so you get up and get back into the huddle. You line up, and the guy in front of you is bigger and stronger, and he’s crushing you in every play. You still get up, go back in and fight, even though you are hurt and you know he will knock you down again. But, at the end of the game, you can hold your head high and be proud that you didn’t quit. He and his team might have won the game. He might have won every skirmish against you, but he will respect you. And you should respect yourself because you didn’t quit. You got up and kept going because that’s what committed football players do. That’s what great parents do. That’s what, hopefully, we are training our children to do.

John Croyle rose to recognition as an All-American defensive end at the University of Alabama during head coach Paul "Bear" Bryant's legendary tenure. Faced with the decision to play professional football or to start a home for abused and neglected children, John established Big Oak Boys’ Ranch in 1974. Today, the outreach has grown to three branches with the addition of a girls’ ranch and a Christian school. John, his wife Tee, and the Big Oak organization have raised more than 1,800 kids to date.

One lucky winner will receive a paperback copy of John Croyle’s book, THE TWO-MINUTE DRILL TO MANHOOD: A Proven Game Plan for Raising Sons. To enter, simply fill out the Rafflecopter form below. This giveaway is open to U.S. residents and will end at 11:59 PM ET on Friday June 14, 2013.

Summer Reading Picks for the Kids!

It’s important to keep your little ones reading over the summer, and some great picture books have recently crossed my desk that you might want to check out!

When We Go Walking
By Cari Best
Illustrated by Kyrsten Brooker

Wendy loves to take walks with her family on Rambling Road. She takes her collecting bag so she can keep the treasures she finds along the way. An old bicycle bell, a faded flag, a pencil and ribbon -- all of them make their way into Wendy’s bag. Sometimes it rains; sometimes it gets hot. But Wendy always walks to find her treasures. Then snow arrives, and nobody can walk for days. What will Wendy do? She uses her treasures to make her very own Rambling Road inside. Everyone loves it! Then she grabs a shovel to clear a path outside so they can head back out on the real Rambling Road. This story encourages kids to enjoy the outdoors, embrace the world around them, and spend quality time with their family!

Princess Cupcake Jones and the Missing Tutu
By Ylleya Fields
Illustrated by Michael LaDuca

Princess Cupcake Jones won’t wear velvet and lace; she only wants her tutu. But one morning she awakes to find that her tutu is gone! She searches the palace and finds all kinds of items that she had lost, but no tutu. She decides to clean up her messy room, and finds even more things! But still no tutu… She flops on her bed in despair and looks up at the ceiling. What is that hanging from the ceiling fan? It’s the tutu she’d tossed in the air the night before! Princess Cupcake will always put her things where they belong from now on. This rhyming tale will delight young princess fans. As a bonus, kids will have fun finding the word “LOVE” hidden in each colorful illustration!

Gandhi: A March to the Sea
By Alice B. McGinty
Illustrated by Thomas Gonzalez

This children’s book is the story of Mohandas Gandhi’s famous March to the Sea, a peaceful protest against British rule of India. Once a quiet child, Gandhi now speaks to the crowd. High taxes on salt are unfair. He encourages the people to take salt from the sea, which has been forbidden. Gandhi draws water from the well of the Untouchables, society’s outcasts. Everyone is equal, he tells the people. It is a very long journey on foot -- 24 days. Will Gandhi and his followers reach the sea? They do, and thousands of people follow his lead in taking salt from the sea. They are arrested and jailed, then released. It is a step toward freedom, but it will be 17 years before India becomes self-ruling. Gandhi: A March to the Sea teaches children about a pivotal event in India’s history that reverberated across the world.

Overcoming Your Fears Is the Message Behind Allstate’s “Good Hands for the #GoodLife” Campaign

This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Allstate for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.
 photo allstatelogo_300x60_zps5487a605.jpg
I’ve always been a bit of a fearful person. When I read about bad things that happen in the world, or watch them on the TV news, I get a pit in my stomach. What if they happened to me or my family? I think it’s natural to become more of a worrywart when you become a parent, but sometimes I let my fears hinder my enjoyment of life. I don’t take many car trips because I’m afraid of a car accident. I won’t wander far from the ocean’s shore because a shark might get me. I don’t accept a business opportunity because I fear public speaking. All of these fears, I know, prevent me from having more enjoyable experiences. Intellectually, I know that the risk of danger is infinitesimal, but still I focus on the fact that harm is possible.

These fears make me want to embrace Allstate’s “Good Hands for the Good Life” message. The Allstate Good Life commercial below tells us that there are risks everywhere, but we shouldn’t let them hold us back from making our lives good. Check it out below:

Allstate wants to be an insurance company that works every day to help bring more good to the lives of its customers by taking care of the bad. Yes, “stuff” happens, as we are reminded every day. And some of it, like the tornado in Oklahoma, is really bad. But we can’t let these events cause us to live in fear. Whenever I’ve pushed through my fears and forced myself to engage in a new experience, I’ve nearly always been thrilled that I did. When I was sixteen, I flew to Japan all by myself (I still can’t believe I did that) to have an experience that I still talk about today. When I graduated from college, I made the decision to leave the only hometown I’d ever known to move to another state where I knew nobody. Now that state is my true home. When people told me that I couldn’t make a living as a writer, I took their advice and got a business degree. I let my doubts rule that decision. But now, all these years later, I’m doing what I love as a writer, showing myself that I shouldn’t have been in doubt and listened to the naysayers.

Often, when people are asked about their regrets near the end of their lives, it’s not the things they did that grieve them. It’s the things they didn’t do. So, I hope to better embrace the message behind Allstate’s “Good Hands for the Good Life” philosophy. And I hope you will, too. Ask yourself: What fears are keeping you from enjoying the good life? What has been holding you back from having more fulfilling and memorable experiences? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section of this post.

Movie Review: Beverly Lewis’ The Confession

I’m a big fan of the books by Beverly Lewis, which feature characters from Amish communities. So, I was excited to hear that several of her books have been made into movies for the Hallmark Channel. A few years ago, they featured The Shunning, which is the first novel in Beverly Lewis’ “The Heritage of Lancaster County” trilogy. And they recently aired the second movie in the series, Beverly Lewis' the Confession. I received The Confession for review, but was fortunate to be able to catch The Shunning first when it was re-aired on Hallmark right before the debut of The Confession. The second movie is a sequel to the first, but you don’t have to watch the first to understand the second.

In the first movie, The Shunning, we’re introduced to Katie Lapp, a young Amish woman who discovers that she was adopted at birth by her Amish parents when an unwed teenage mother, an “Englisher” (non-Amish), gave her to them. Now that Katie’s on the brink of marrying an Amish man, her birth mother, who has terminal cancer, seeks out the daughter she gave away. In The Confession, Katie heads to New York to finally connect with the woman who gave birth to her. But their reunion is complicated because her mother’s husband, who has a gambling addiction, has hired an actress to pose as his wife’s Amish daughter! Knowing that his wife has cut him off from her family’s money, his plan is to have her sign it over to her fake daughter, who will then give it to him when his wife dies. In the meantime, the real Katie is mistaken for a new maid when she shows up to meet her mother and ends up working in the house while the imposter plays the role of the beloved daughter. Will Katie’s mother find out the truth before her death? And where does Katie belong -- in the wealthy world of her birth mother or in the Amish world of her adoptive parents? To confuse matters even further, an old Amish boyfriend shows up while Katie is just becoming attracted to an “Englisher.” Who will she choose? I can’t wait to see the final movie in the series to find out!

The Confession, directed and co-produced by Michael Landon Jr., is a touching depiction of a young woman’s quest to find her true identity. Not only is she torn between two very different families (birth and adoptive; wealthy and simple), but she’s also not sure whether she’s meant to live the Amish or Englisher lifestyle. I could really feel Katie’s pain as she struggled with her love for both families and lifestyles, knowing that she couldn’t possibly have it all. We all face tough choices in life, and Katie’s entire future -- and the happiness of those she loves -- depends on the decisions she must make. I really enjoyed watching The Confession and will definitely watch the third movie in the series to find out what Katie decides!

The Shunning is already available on DVD, and The Confession will be available on June 11th. Pre-order your copy from Amazon today.
