Book Review: If I Had as Many Grandchildren as You… by Lori Stewart

Grandparents Day is this Sunday, September 9th, and I have a wonderful gift idea for children to give to their grandparents. It’s a book called If I Had as Many Grandchildren as You... by Lori Stewart. In this delightful rhyming book that children and their grandparents can read together, a sage old lion gives advice to grandparents about all the wondrous things they can do with their grandchildren! As the dedication notes, grandparents are the “memory makers” of the family, and it is their mission to create great memories with their grandchildren. For example, the lion advises:

“We’d pack buckets and shovels and walk hand in hand
To the beach, where we’d build great huge castles of sand,
With ramparts and turrets and tall drippy towers,
Surrounded by moats filled with boatloads of flowers;
Adorned with pink seashells and beach glass and kelp,
And every last grandchild would pitch in and help!”

After this adventure, children and grandparents are urged to be creative!

“After some cookies and pink lemonade,
We’d dress up in costumes and start a … PARADE!
Our costumes are not something bought off the shelves.
We’d find some old fabric and make them ourselves!”

Each page features colorful photographs that show the fun that can be had when children and grandchildren spend the day together. I can just imagine them coming up with some new adventures after being inspired by the words and pictures in If I Had as Many Grandchildren as You… I hope you’ll pick up a copy for the grandparents in your life.
