Sharing Christmas: Peace Begins with You

If it is possible, as far as it depends on you,
live at peace with everyone.
~Romans 12:18~

It seems as if peace gets harder and harder to find every day. As much as we wish for “world peace,” people continue to fight and persecute one another. And we feel helpless to do anything about it. But the Bible tells us that achieving peace must begin with the actions of each individual. In other words, it must begin with you.

When we read more of Romans, chapter 12, we are told to “live in harmony with one another” and “be willing to associate with people of low position.” But it goes even a step further in telling us to feed our enemies. Our enemies? It’s not an easy task. Some people, we feel, are more deserving of our charity. But what about those we consider to be undeserving? Will we ever achieve world peace if we neglect them?

“Do not repay anyone evil for evil,” we are told in this verse. But it’s not just enough to “turn the other cheek.” We must “overcome evil with good.” When was the last time you did something good for someone you disliked? Or someone who repulsed you? When we learn to live in peace with everyone, we move one step closer to spreading peace all over the world. But it’s up to each and every one of us to take that first step. Today.

Dear Father, give us the will and the courage to do good for all of your people. Teach us how to love one another just as you love each and every one of us. May we be your instruments of peace throughout the world. Amen.
