Give Your Little Soccer Fan the Coolest Room Ever with a 3D Soccer Light!

When my #2 son went away to college, we moved our seven-year-old twin boys into his old room. Since then, we have re-painted it and added some “younger kid” touches. One item we added to the wall was an awesome 3D Soccer Light! Here’s what it looks like on the boys’ wall:

My boys think it is so cool. It looks like a soccer ball has smashed into their wall. Of course, it’s actually a wall sticker behind it that gives it that effect. It wasn’t difficult to apply to the wall. Just do it slowly and carefully so that you get all the bubbles out and it lays flat. After putting on the sticker, we attached the light. You can either attach the plug included and plug it into the wall or run it on 3 AA batteries. (For very small children, be sure to use the batteries instead of the cord so there’s no risk of strangulation with the cord.) There’s an on/off switch so the light doesn’t burn more than it needs to, and it’s cool to the touch so little hands won’t get burned.

The 3D Soccer Light makes a great nightlight for kids who don’t like to sleep in total darkness. It also makes it easy for parents to check in on their kids when they’re sleeping. It comes in the standard black/white version and a pink/white version for girls! The following video will tell you more about the 3D Soccer Light:

[Email subscribers, please click on the title of this post to view the video online.]

My boys love sports, so this is the perfect addition to their room. It’s decorative, but useful, too! The LED lights also make it energy-efficient. Visit to learn more about the 3D Soccer Light. If you live in Canada, you can find it at select Walmart stores. Visit them on Facebook at

Children’s Book Review: The Mystical Wood, by Simon Jenner

Children love fantasy books like the Harry Potter and Magic Tree House series, and the new children’s book, The Mystical Wood, by Simon Jenner, will appeal to them, too! This book is a little different because it’s all written in rhyme. When a little boy tries to find his wayward dog, he’s cast into a mysterious forest where a wizard gives him a special sack. Inside the sack are three boxes that the boy must use wisely to find his dog and return home. Along the way, he meets a dragon, a bumblebee, and a T-Rex. They all tell him,

“Little boy, oh little boy, what business have you here?
This wood is full of monsters and other things to fear.”

But the boy is able to use the items in his sack to deter the creatures from hurting him so that he can go on his way. After his success, the wizard re-appears and offers sound advice to the boy:

“Now listen to my wise words and try not to forget,
To care for those that you love and think about your pet.
Respect all living creatures and try to lend a hand.
Bring enemies together, to talk and understand.
Stand tall when facing danger, don’t give in to your fear,
And don’t forget to visit. You are always welcome here.”

Children will look forward to discovering which creature the boy will encounter next, all while learning the lessons of caring for our animals, negotiating conflict, and facing our fears. Colorful illustrations by Pierre Fihue also draw children into the magical story and make this book appropriate for early readers. Visit to learn more about this delightful book, listen to the audio version, and order a copy for the holidays!

High-Quality Christmas Stockings at Low Prices from Ugly Sofa! (GIVEAWAY)

When it comes to Christmas stockings (or “socks,” as my husband calls them), not just any old stocking will do. They have to be roomy enough to hold lots of little goodies (no strings looping around inside) and durable enough to get tossed around and brought back out every year. I was recently sent some stockings from Ugly Sofa that fit this criteria perfectly!

These heavy-duty beautifully quilted stockings are extremely well made, lined, and adorable. I love them! And they have a fun assortment, so there’s a design for everyone in the family. My boys loved looking through the stockings and picking out just the right one. Caleb picked a reindeer stocking with a little tail that sticks out the side of the stocking! Austen loved Santa on skis. And we even reserved a stocking with a kitten on it for our cats!

Ugly Sofa calls them Recession Christmas Stockings because they’re priced just right for your budget at only $9.99! In addition to the quilted ones I received, they have velvet and linen stockings, too. Smaller stockings for baby’s first Christmas are also available. If you’re in the market for new stockings this year, go to and see the excellent selection at Ugly Sofa! The quality is high, but the price is low -- perfect for your holiday budget! (P.S. While you’re there, you might want to check out their slipcovers, too!)

One lucky winner will receive a set of five (5) quilted stockings from Ugly Sofa! To enter, simply fill out the Rafflecopter form below. Be patient in waiting for it to load and be sure it says it’s for the “Ugly Sofa” giveaway. If it says “Read more,” click on the link to access the form.

The Pros and Cons of Homeschooling

Guest post by Mariana Ashley

Although homeschooling has become increasingly popular over the years, it still gets a somewhat bad rap. Homeschooling is often associated with a very specific type of family, those who are religiously radical or are otherwise “backward.” Having been homeschooled through grade school myself, I can say that, just like any other alternative choice, the decision to keep your children out of the traditional schooling system will receive plenty of criticism. But speaking from experience, I know both the pros and cons of homeschooling intimately. Here are a few things to consider before making your decision:

1. Enables self-directed learning.
Both in my experience, and in the experience of fellow homeschooler Margaret Heidenery, who recently recounted in the New York Times her childhood, the self-direction inherent in home-based learning is the best part about it. We know both scientifically and intuitively that everyone is different and learns differently, but traditional schools put everyone on the same level. When homeschooled, there is more room for a child to explore and discover her strengths and weaknesses. This approach to learning develops self-confidence and fosters creativity.

2. Creates greater family cohesion.
Children who attend traditional schools spend most of their day away from home. By the time they return, after homework, extracurricular activities, dinner, etc., quality time spent with the family is practically zero. In my experience, being homeschooled as a child is precisely why I am so close to my parents and siblings to this day. We did everything together, and, in so doing, established a family bond that many of my friends envy and admire.

3. Provides a flexible schedule.
The freedom to take family vacations when it’s most convenient, have lessons every other day, or otherwise structure your school schedule to your own liking, is another added benefit of homeschooling. As Heidenery tells in her article, homeschooling enabled her family to travel to different countries and learn about foreign cultures simultaneously. In effect, the classroom becomes the world.

1. Requires lots of time and effort on the instructing parent(s)’ part.
In order for homeschooling to be effective, parents must realize from the beginning that teaching your children at home will require lots of time and effort. From picking the right curriculum, to recording your child’s progress, to putting in the required hours that ensures they meet their academic goals, parents must be sure that they are equipped to make a serious commitment. This often requires at least one parent to put their careers on hold.

2. Kids may miss out on opportunities to socialize with different children.
In my personal opinion, the argument that homeschooling poorly socializes children’s isn’t a strong one. While it’s true that kids may miss out on socializing with other kids during school time, homeschoolers can create opportunities beyond the confines of school to interact with others in their peer group. For example, when I was homeschooled, my siblings and I enrolled in Boys and Girls Club sports and took music lessons with other children. Tapping into your local homeschooling community is also a great way to meet and play with kids of different backgrounds.

3. Eventually returning to a structured school environment becomes a difficult transition.
Some parents teach their kids at home through grade school, and others do so until the end of high school. Eventually, however, almost all parents want their children to go off to college. As such, there will come a time when your child will have to enter a traditional classroom. Although most kids make the transition easily, it’s still difficult to go from spending time with your family almost 24/7 to learning from adults and playing with peers you don’t know.

The Elves Have Arrived!

Every year, soon after Thanksgiving, Santa’s elves arrive at our house! These fun friends from the North Pole (aka Elf Magic) are an annual tradition. One morning, my boys wake up to find that the elves have arrived in their room. And every night while the boys are sleeping, the mischievous Elf Magic elves like to go on “elfcapades”! They hide in fun places during the night, and my boys have great fun every morning trying to find where they’re hidden. During the day, my kids love to play with their BEFFs (Best Elf Friends Forever) before putting them to bed in their special elf sleeping bags and sprinkling “snow” on them to give the elves their special magic.

This year, our Elf Magic elves arrived with wonderful new “elfits” (aka clothes)! Our girl elf arrived in a beautiful white dress with interchangeable colored ribbons! And our three boy elves were wearing a snow suit, a hockey uniform, and a play outfit. I was so impressed with the high quality of these new clothes for the elves. They are beautifully made, and the elves look adorable in them. I’d love to get more of the wonderful outfits available for Elf Magic elves!

I’ll be sharing more of our family’s adventures with the Elf Magic elves as we get into the next weeks leading up to Christmas! What about you? Does your family have a special tradition for the holidays? I hope you’ll consider establishing the Elf Magic tradition at your house. It’s been a wonderful and exciting adventure for our family, and we look forward to it every year!

Product Review: Calico Critters Margaret and Halley’s Dress Shop Play Set

As my daughter gets older, I notice that she’s doing more role-playing, and I love watching and listening to her play. She pretends to have a mom, dad, babies, pet dogs and cats, and so on. I am so happy she has such a great imagination!

So, when Blogtricity sent a set of Calico Critters for review, Sadie was beyond excited to try out the Margaret and Halley’s Dress Shop. This ready-to-play set comes with Margaret and Halley and their own special items, such as dresses, purses, and jewelry -- all the things that girly cats need! I love the ease of this set. Sadie could dress and undress the cats with no problems. This set is for ages 3 years and up due to a few small parts. On the parenting side, I thought this set was awesome. It was our first experience with Calico Critters, and I am sure it won’t be our last.

Calico Critters also offers themed sets, ready-to-play sets, furniture and accessories, plush critters and more. They are reasonably priced so they make great birthday gifts or special treats for the little ones in your life. Check them out at Growing Tree Toys. They have a large selection of Calico Critters toys to choose from!

Exclusive Interview with Robert Gray, Author of “Eve Hallows and the Book of Shrieks”

I hope you enjoy the following interview with Robert Gray, author of the new middle-grade novel, Eve Hallows and the Book of Shrieks. This would make a great holiday gift!

What is this book about?

Eve Hallows and the Book of Shrieks tells the story of a fourteen-year-old girl named Eve Hallows who lives in a monster world called Gravesville. Even though Eve is a human, she’s never met one and thinks they are scary creatures. When a mysterious organization called The Source starts terrorizing the monsters in Gravesville, Eve is forced to move to the human world, where she must learn to live like a human. In short, the story is one part Jungle Book, two parts Nightmare Before Christmas, and a dash of Nancy Drew mystery.

How did you get the idea for this book?

My daughter had written a story in 6th grade about a girl who leaves her happy city life and learns to adapt in a pastoral town. She told me she’d written the story for me and asked if I could write a similar story for her. I wanted to expand on her idea, so I decided to inject some of my childhood into the story. Since I grew up on a healthy diet of Scooby Doo, The Munsters, Addams Family, and anything with Tim Burton’s name on it, Eve Hallows became a merger of what I loved as a child and my daughter’s original story.

Is this your first book? If not, what else have you written?

This is my first published novel, but the fourth novel I’ve attempted to write. I guess you could say Eve Hallows and the Book of Shrieks is the first book I am happy to have my name on. I’ve also written some short stories and writing-related articles for several ezines.

When did you start writing? Do you have any advice for beginning writers?

I’ve loved writing even before I could read. What attracted me to writing, oddly enough, was the sound of a typewriter. I can remember being very young, perhaps four or five, and listening to my mom snapping away on the keys. The rhythmic tapping was like a siren call for me. It would be another twenty years before I would write seriously for publication, and, sadly, typewriters would be all but extinct.

The best advice I’ve ever received came from my 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Woods. During a test, she’d warned me to keep my eyes on my own paper. While this wasn’t meant as writing advice -- and it was mostly embarrassing at the time -- her advice has served me well over the years. It’s very easy, especially for beginning writers, to be jealous of other writers’ success stories, especially when your own work is piling up form rejections. Getting discouraged by what the writer next to you is doing will never make you a better writer. Worry about your work and your goals.

I’ve also written a number of articles for beginning writers. You can find them all here:

Why did you decide to write a book for Young Adults?

Like a mentioned earlier, I wrote the story for my daughter. I certainly hope others read the novel, as well, but in truth, my daughter is thirteen, so that’s the age group I focused on. I can say I enjoyed writing Eve Hallows more than anything I’ve done in the past. Because I wrote it for one person, I didn’t have to worry about all the extra baggage that comes along with writing a novel -- finding an agent and a publisher, marketing, etc. And that was extremely liberating. My only job was to make one girl happy. And I had so much fun doing it.

Do you plan a sequel or future books?

Eve’s story is far from over. Turns out she’s a much more resourceful character than I first envisioned, so there will be at least another three books based on her. I’m currently writing the second novel in the series. That one should be available by Summer 2012. After I finish her series, I’m going to focus on several other projects that are at various stages of completion. Most of them were novels I’d written while trying to find my way as an author, and I really didn’t know what I was doing. With the benefit of more experience, hopefully I can revitalize them.

Do you have a website? How can we order this book?

I have two websites. My main site is For kids, I’ve also created, which focuses exclusively on the Eve Hallows series. The latter site is an interesting project I started with my daughter. All of the blog posts are written by Eve Hallows, and she has some comical things to say about the human world.

Eve Hallows and the Book of Shrieks is currently available in paperback and ebook format. You can visit my page at for links to where the book is available.

Monday Meet and Greet: Someday I’ll Learn

Your name: Chelsea Day

Where do you blog? Someday I’ll Learn

Someday I'll Learn

Tell us a little about you: I’m a marketing consultant and new mom living in San Diego with my husband. I run the family blog, Someday I’ll Learn, which is all about tackling domestic life … one day at a time!

How did you decide what to name your blog? When we settled down just out of college, I was pretty clueless about domestic issues and frequently found myself declaring, “Someday I’ll learn!” Now, I’m having fun learning new things daily.

What are your favorite things?
• Crème brûlée
• My son’s laugh
• Red-eye coffee
• Mod podge
• The color yellow

What are you least favorite things?
• Porcelain dolls
• Freeway overpasses (I always feel like I’ll just go careening off!)
• Blood
• Poor grammar
• Dishes

When and why did you start blogging? I moved to San Diego in 2009 and didn’t know anyone. I spent a lot of time browsing other blogs and felt the urge to create one for our own family. It’s been an incredible experience, and I’ve actually made friends with quite a few bloggers in real life as a result.

What do you blog about? Someday I’ll Learn offers personal insights and shortcuts for cooking, cleaning, parenting, organization and more. I aim to simplify life for other busy parents with helpful tips and a healthy dose of reality.

What does your family think of your blog? Do they read it? My family has been incredibly supportive, and most of them read the blog every day. My husband, Nate, is a contributor. Everyone loves his sense of humor!

When do you find the time to blog? Good question. Uhhh ... I don’t sleep a whole lot.

What is your favorite blog post ever? I Have PTSD is the most personal post I’ve written. It was difficult, but I’m proud of myself for putting it out there and being a voice of encouragement for other people to share their own stories.

What has been your biggest blogging challenge? Staying authentic and true to my own voice while working with brands to monetize the blog. Someday I’ll Learn has transformed from a little family blog into an at-home job, but it’s still a space for my own personal reflections. Balancing those interests and keeping my priorities straight takes conscious effort.

What advice would you give a new blogger? Make friends! I’ve found so many supportive people in the blogosphere. It can be isolating initially to sit at home and put your ideas out there without a ton of feedback. Join blogging groups and converse with other people.

What widget or feature could you not live without? LinkWithin. I love being reminded of past, related posts that I had completely forgotten about!

Celebrate Advent Together with the Family Advent Activity Pack from Families with Purpose (GIVEAWAY)

Families with Purpose is an organization that is passionate about all things family! They provide practical advice, empowering strategies, helpful tools, and loads of family fun ideas. This terrific organization recently sent me a Family Advent Activity Pack for review. This kit is a wonderful way for families to celebrate the season of Advent together. For just $12.95, you get all three of the items below!

Advent Treasure Hunt Calendar

On the back of the calendar are questions for families to answer each day of December, accompanied by a Bible verse. For example, the first question is: “What animal announces the start of a new day on a farm and signals the beginning of the holiday season for us? Lamentations 3:23” When you open the window for December first on the front of the calendar, you see a picture of a rooster, along with the text of Lamentations 3:23: “The Lord can always be trusted to show mercy each morning.” This is a delightful way for parents and children to explore Bible passages together, as well as a fun activity for children to try to guess the answer to the question!

Gather Round the Christmas Tree: Family Devotions for Advent

This booklet by Dr. Mary Manz Simon is filled with family devotions, stories, and fun facts that your family can read together each day in preparation for the celebration of Christmas. The author uses the stories of popular tree ornaments and family traditions to emphasize the religious aspects of the season. CLICK HERE to see some sample pages from this inspirational book!

Which Way Is Christmas? An Advent Book with Devotions, Rhymes & Seek-and-Find Picture Puzzles

This fun activity book leads children on a search for the baby Jesus! Kids scan the colorful Seek-and-Find photographs for hidden objects. My kids LOVE these kinds of books. Each day also contains a suggested Bible citation along with a short devotion. This book is especially fun to do with younger children.

The Family Advent Activity Pack from Families with Purpose provides an easy and fun way for your family to talk about Christmas, the Bible, Jesus, and the themes of the season. I am really excited about sharing these activities with my boys this year!
