Book Review: 15 Minutes Outside: 365 Ways to Get Out of the House and Connect with Your Kids, by Rebecca P. Cohen

Rebecca P. Cohen’s book, 15 Minutes Outside: 365 Ways to Get Out of the House and Connect with Your Kids, could not have entered my house at a better time. With the snow melting and spring coming, I needed some outdoor play ideas for my little family, and this book hit home.

Not only is this book full of wonderful, awesome, and fun ideas for outdoor play, but it is sectioned off into months and even has an idea for each day of the month. There are ideas for winter, spring, summer and fall, for all types of weather and climates, and ideas for different locations. This book is great for young kids all the way up to teenagers. Picnics, walks, blowing bubbles, nature exploring, chalk… These are all things I love to do, but just needed to be reminded of these little low-cost things that are right in our back yard. Who wants to go out and spend money every time they want to have some family fun?

My family has already done so much since receiving this book, and I have not heard one complaint yet. We have put 15 Minutes Outside right next to the supper table, and we pick an activity that we are going to do and follow through. I think we all feel better as a family, and this is something that we do together almost every night. (I think we’ve missed only one night due to really bad rain.) Every family should have this book and make the “15 minutes outside rule” a part of their lives, even if they are super busy. Your kids will thank you for making these memories, and I feel great as a mom making this a part of our daily routine.

In a world where kids are already too busy, overworked at school, and entertained by technology, we need to start re-introducing the small things in life ... family time, exercise, outdoors, nature. The things we take for granted are right at our fingertips, ready and waiting to be used.
