Bedtime Stories from the Heim Household!

Tonight, my twins and I read two children’s books that I was sent for review. The boys really loved both of them. If Santa is going to be bringing some books to your children this Christmas (and I hope he will!), these two books would make great choices!

Freddi the Dog (Eats Everything)
By Lisa and Randy Herman
Illustrated by Bruce Hammond

Freddi the dog really is a very nice dog, except for one teeny little “naughty bone” in her body. And when that naughty bone gets tickled… watch out! One day, Freddi’s naughty bone caused her to eat just about everything in the house when her family was gone. A telephone, a wig, and even a smelly pair of underwear went into Freddi’s tummy. Needless to say, Freddi got really sick and needed an operation. Thankfully, Freddi learned her lesson not to eat anything that doesn’t belong to her! This story is told in a very silly style, which I can’t adequately describe in this review. Let me just say that my boys were giggling the whole time we read it and wanted to read it again! They hope to hear many more adventures of Freddi the dog in the future!

Hannah and the Talking Tree
Written and Illustrated by Elke Weiss

Little Hannah has a problem -- her ears are huge! Not surprisingly, she is shunned by others because she looks different. Fortunately, Hannah’s heart is just as big as her ears, which she shows when she meets a tree who is also very lonely. All of his other tree friends have been cut down, and he may be next! Can Hannah convince the people of her town to save this very special tree? My kids loved what happened when the townspeople started listening to Hannah. I won’t give away the surprise, but you can probably guess that it has something to do with her ears! This story has two important themes: celebrating differences and saving the environment. It’s also beautifully illustrated by the author.
