Children’s Book Review: More Bears! By Kenn Nesbitt

“Once upon a time there was a story. This story was a lovely story with absolutely no bears in it -- not a single bear anywhere. Then one day…”

Thus begins the book, More Bears! by Kenn Nesbitt. But, naturally, a book called More Bears! has got to have some bears in it. The fun thing about this book is that kids interact with the author of the book to make sure that he includes lots of bears in the story! When the author hears children scream, “More bears!” he tries to ignore them because he really doesn’t want to write about bears. But the readers are very insistent! So, the author adds a cute little baby bear to the story. But that’s not enough to appease his readers. No, they demand, “More bears!” So, the author adds more and more (as the children continue to yell, “More bears!”), and before you know it the book is filled with bears! Kids will love to look at the pictures to see all of the fun bears in the book, such as “a bear named Elbow who wasn’t very smart and always wore his underpants on the outside of his regular pants.” (That line definitely got a big guffaw from my boys!) Soon, there are so many bears that they can’t fit on the page. The bears are getting grumpy, which makes the author grumpy. So, he orders all of the bears out of the book. And he is happy until…

Well, you’ll have to read the book to find out how it ends! More Bears! is an incredibly fun, interactive book that’s perfect for reading aloud, especially to more than one child so they can all yell “More bears!” together! It’s not surprising that it’s written by Kenn Nesbitt, who is a performer and visits more than 60 schools a year with his poetry books, such as My Hippo Has the Hiccups and The Tighty Whitey Spider!
