You May Be Surprised to Learn That Your Child Isn’t Safely Buckled … Check It Out on National Seat Check Saturday, September 25!

Did you know that motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children ages 3 and older? Every year, thousands of children are tragically injured or killed in automobile accidents. That’s because most parents and caregivers don’t realize that their children aren’t properly restrained in the car. In fact, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that nearly 3 out of 4 car seats are not used correctly. Obviously, this has got to change!

Child Passenger Safety Week runs from September 19-25, and certified technicians will be available to provide hands-on child safety seat inspections and advice for free on National Seat Check Saturday, September 25. Go to to locate a car seat inspection station near you and take advantage of the free inspection on September 25. Even if you think your child’s car seat is installed correctly, I encourage you to have it checked out to be sure.

I also recommend that you visit for instructional videos, informational pamphlets, and links to product ratings and recall lists.

If you’re on Twitter, NHTSA experts will be on hand this Wednesday, September 22 at 2:00 p.m. EST to offer information and insight on car seats and how to travel safely with children. Make sure you’re following the Child Passenger Safety Twitter account (@childseatsafety) and use the hashtag #CPSweek to follow along and ask your questions.
