Book Review: Melvin the Magnificent Molar!

Getting kids to do a good job of taking care of their teeth can be tough. But the new children’s book, Melvin the Magnificent Molar!, by Julia Cook and Laura Jana, MD, does a great job of encouraging kids to get excited about good oral hygiene.

Melvin the Molar is the narrator of this book, and he teaches children all kinds of fun things, such as the “Happy Tooth” song! He also explains why there are different types of teeth, why kids need to go to the dentist, and what they can expect to happen at their dental appointment. I love how the authors describe the dentist’s tools, such as “Mister Thirsty,” who sucks everything dry, and “Miss Tickles,” who polishes our teeth! Floss is referred to as the “Magic String.” The Tooth Fairy even makes a few cameo appearances in this book.

My kids really enjoy reading Melvin the Magnificent Molar! They even ask me afterward when they can go back to the dentist! At the end of the book are “Melvin’s Top 10 Tips for Happy, Healthy Teeth,” which are important for both kids and grown-ups to know.

Melvin the Magnificent Molar! can be purchased at or through the Amazon link below. This book is an essential addition to your children’s home library!
