The Discovery Channel’s New LIFE Series, Narrated by Oprah Winfrey, Premieres This Sunday

On Sunday, March 21, 2010, the Discovery Channel will air the first episodes of its new series called LIFE, which is an 11-part follow-up to PLANET EARTH, the most successful natural history documentary of all time!

LIFE takes viewers on a more intimate journey than PLANET EARTH by examining fascinating animals and plants using breathtaking cinematography. Narrated by Oprah Winfrey, LIFE showcases never-before-seen behaviors.

Here’s what you can expect (from their website):
Our world is home to more than 30 million different animal and plant species, each locked in a unique fight for survival. The all-new 11-part series LIFE is the definitive exploration of the adaptability and diversity of life on earth, revealing the most spectacular, bizarre and fascinating behaviors that living things have devised in order to thrive. Many of these were captured for the first time using the latest in state-of-the-art high-definition filming techniques.

From strange creatures, such as the star-nosed mole that hunts underwater using bubbles to smell its prey, to epic spectacles, including millions of fruit bats darkening the Zambian sky, each episode tells mind-blowing stories of survival with drama, humor and suspense.

More than four years in the making, filmed over 3,000 days, across every continent and in every habitat, this is life as no one has ever seen it before.

LIFE would be a great series for parents to watch with their children, although you should be aware that some of the “food chain” scenes in LIFE might be disturbing for children under five.

LIFE also extends online with a new website at that features videos and games, along with an interactive endangered species map. You can also learn about the #factsofLIFE by following @LifeonDiscovery on Twitter and become a fan on Facebook at

The LIFE series will be available to own on DVD and Blu-ray at and wherever DVDs are sold on June 1 (great Father’s Day gift!) and is also available for pre-order now.

  1. I can't wait for it to come on! We actually have the dvd of Earth but someone decided to nab the dvd and left us with only the Blu Ray disc, so until I get a Blu Ray player I am stuck! This is an awesome movie, and well worth watching.

  2. Hi Brandi! We don't have a Blu Ray player either, so I can sympathize. This series looks really good, too. I'm sure the photography will be fantastic.
