Are You Thinking About Getting a Pet? Try an Animal Shelter!

Did you know that…

- Each year, approximately 4 million pets are adopted.

- Of the 8 million pets that enter animal shelters each year, approximately 3 million healthy and treatable pets are euthanized.

- It is estimated that 17 million people will acquire a pet within the next year.

- To save all the healthy and treatable pets that are euthanized, we just need 3 million of these people to adopt.

That’s why The Humane Society of the United States, Maddie’s Fund, and the Ad Council have established The Shelter Pet Project (SPP). This campaign aims at increasing the rate of shelter pet adoption in the United States. They want 17 million people who plan on getting a new animal this year to know that shelters should be the first and best place to find furry companions!

Adopting a pet is a life-changing and enriching experience. When adopting a pet, people are obtaining companions that give them unconditional love, affection, and attention. Adopting a pet from a shelter not only saves an animal’s life, but is also good for our own well-being as research shows that owning a pet has many positive psychological and physical health benefits. Animals in shelters are often better socialized than their costly counterparts, and most come vaccinated, sterilized and microchipped as well.

If you’ve been talking about getting a pet, I encourage you to visit Or click on the Bridgit below to see an adorable video about pet adoption, read some “Pet Personals,” or make a pledge to help spread the word about adopting shelter animals. I’ve heard that many shelters have more animals than usual because people have had to give up their pets for economic reasons. If you’re financially able to support a new pet and have a lot of love in your heart to give an animal, please consider adopting from a shelter!
