Grammar School for Bloggers: Dollars and Sense

I saw the following error in The Wall Street Journal the other day:

$15 dollars

This is incorrect because the dollar sign and the word “dollars” say the same thing! So, only use one or the other. Your options are:

15 dollars
fifteen dollars

I’ve also seen the following error when it comes to cents:

.01 cents

This is also incorrect! This really says that the price is 1/100 of a cent. That’s super cheap! The following options are correct:

1 cent
one cent

When it comes to money, you want to be sure that you’re making “sense”!

  1. Is my heart ever warmed by seeing your "Grammar School for Bloggers"! I was just talking to someone the other day about the deplorable spelling and grammar one finds on the internet. Keep up the good work!
