Tips for Getting a Good Night’s Sleep

I recently asked people for their best bedtime tips. If you struggle with getting a good night’s sleep, perhaps one of these ideas will work for you!

Eliminate stress. Don't do stressful things like looking at bills or having a difficult conversation before bedtime. Write down your worries and put them away. Get things ready for the next day so your to-do list doesn’t keep you awake.

People are divided on the issue of noise. Some say the room should be quiet, with no TV or other noise. Others recommend using a sound machine or a fan for white noise, watching TV or listening to soothing music.

People were also divided on the issue of food or drink. Some said to avoid them 1-2 hours before bedtime so you don’t have to use the bathroom at night. Others say a cup of chamomile or herbal tea, milk or warm cocoa helps them to sleep. Avoid caffeine.

Massage your feet or have your partner give you a massage!

Keep the room cool. Turn down the heat (or turn up the air conditioning, depending on the season).

Read a book.

Keep the room dark. Consider purchasing blackout curtains or shades, or use a sleep mask.

Stop using all gadgets, electronics and computers an hour before sleeping.

Use lavender oil in a diffuser.

Do breathing exercises.

Take a bath before bed.

Keep regular hours. Go to bed at the same time every night if possible and get up at the same time every morning.

Use soft sheets, a comforter or quilt, and pajamas.

Make sure you have a comfortable pillow and mattress, like a memory foam hybrid mattress from Tomorrow Sleep. (Get $150 off any $500 purchase from Tomorrow Sleep with the code SUSAN150 if you purchase by 12/31/17.)
