October is National Dental Hygiene Month, a time when we should think about whether we are doing all we can to take the best care of our teeth. Finding the right dentist, toothbrush, toothpaste and other dental-health products can make a huge difference in helping our teeth to last a lifetime. One of the biggest traps for germs and bacteria is the enamel on our teeth. If the enamel isn’t properly cared for, it can become rough, like sandpaper, causing bacteria and germs to stick. Notice what happens in the picture below when I shake cornmeal onto sandpaper. Even when I tip the sandpaper up, a lot of the cornmeal stays trapped on the surface of the sandpaper.
But when we polish our teeth’s enamel well, the teeth become smooth, and they aren’t such traps for germs and bacteria. See how a smooth surface, like wax paper, allows the cornmeal below to slide down. It is less likely to stick to the paper, just as bacteria is less likely to stick to your teeth when the enamel is smooth.
So, be sure to use a product that does a great job of keeping your enamel smooth like Colgate Enamel Health toothpaste. It not only replenishes your teeth’s natural calcium, but it gently polishes your teeth to smooth out your enamel so germs are less likely to stick to your teeth and cause decay. The video below shows how it works:
