Movie Review and Giveaway: "Summer in February," Starring Dan Stevens of "Downton Abbey"

I miss watching new episodes of Downton Abbey on Sunday nights, but I found a little piece of the show last night when I watched the movie, Summer in February. This film stars Dan Stevens, who played Matthew on Downton Abbey, and is also a period piece that takes place in the early 20th century. Summer in February, however, tells the real-life story of artist Alfred (AJ) Munning and the love triangle that forms between him, the beautiful Florence Carter-Wood, and Munning’s friend Gilbert (played by Stevens).

All of the acting in this film is superb. Dominic Cooper makes a very believable eccentric artist, who is deeply flawed and yet admired for his vast talent. Emily Browning as Florence is both beautiful and mysterious. It’s easy to see why AJ and Gilbert were both so intrigued by her. And Dan Stevens is the perfect choice to play the soldier Gilbert. At one point he hints at some of the tragedies he experienced while serving in Africa, almost mocking the shallow concerns of his friends in England. This is a tragic story that all unfolds thanks to a single fateful decision made by Florence.

Watch the trailer below:
The DVD includes a very interesting interview with Dan Stevens, who also served as a producer on the movie. He shares how he first read the book on which this movie is based in high school and has been determined all these years to bring the story to the screen. I hope you’ll pick up a copy of the DVD, Summer in February, and enjoy the gorgeous Cornish scenery, moving story, and brilliant acting.

*Note to parents: There is some full frontal nudity in this movie, so it's not appropriate for children.
