Bibi is the grandmother and matriarch of her herd, and it is her responsibility to lead the others to water. But along the way, baby Tembo gets side-tracked by objects that remind her of memories, such as playing jackalberry tag, stork chase, and hide-and-seek, and falls behind. Bibi is always there and calls out to little Tembo to guide her way safely to water, teaching Tembo that if she listens she can learn how to find water, just like she does. In addition to this comforting familial tale, included on the last page of the book is an author’s note about elephant behaviors and social structure. With sound words and repetition throughout the book, My Bibi Always Remembers makes a wonderful read-aloud and captures the heartwarming relationship between grandparents and grandchildren.
Having also reviewed Stay Close to Mama and Just Like My Papa, Toni Buzzeo has become one of my favorite children’s authors. With themes about family tied in with the majestic animals of Africa, children not only learn about what makes a family, but also about how our human families resemble those of animals. My Bibi Always Remembers reminds us of how much our elders know about life and hold the history of our families. Little Tembo is growing up feeling secure thanks to the presence of her grandmother, who knows a lot about finding the things her family needs and the importance of staying together. Children will also love the adorable illustrations by Mike Wohnoutka, which are realistic and yet sweet, with lovely elephant smiles and loving gestures. My Bibi Always Remembers is sure to become a family favorite.
