GEMINA tells her story, with an afterword showing a photograph of the real Gemina. The endpapers are composed of letters from the giraffe's young fans.
Just like the Santa Barbara Zoo, our local zoo has an exhibit that allows people to feed giraffes, so Gemina’s story was especially appealing to our family. Not only does it tell the story of a beautiful animal, but it teaches children that looking “different” just makes animals -- and people -- unique! In the book, a girl in a wheelchair and a boy with scoliosis are especially comforted by Gemina’s popularity despite her unusual appearance. In Gemina’s twenty-one years of life, she was the zoo’s most famous and beloved resident. June is National Zoo and Aquarium Month, making this a great time to share Gemina’s story with your children or grandchildren!
