One of my favorite new television series this year has been When Calls the Heart on the Hallmark Channel. It’s based on books by bestselling author Janette Oke, and tells the story of a young woman named Elizabeth Thatcher, who was born into a wealthy family but decides to take on the adventure of a lifetime by becoming a schoolteacher in a poor mining town. The townspeople have been devastated by a mining accident that took the lives of many of the men in the village, and the widows and children left behind are having a tough time making ends meet.
They recently aired the season finale, but if you missed the show this season, there’s still time to catch up! Fortunately, you can get started with the DVD, When Calls the Heart: Lost & Found, which contains the first two episodes of the series. You’ll meet Elizabeth (played by Erin Krakow) and her potential love interest, Constable Jack Thornton (played by Daniel Lissing), as well as the other people in town, including Abigail Stanton, a widow played by Lori Loughlin (Full House).
Set in the 19th century, When Calls the Heart is especially appealing to fans of historical stories like the classic Little House on the Prairie series. In fact, When Calls the Heart is directed by Michael Landon Jr., son of the late Michael Landon, who directed, produced and acted in Little House. Both men excel in bringing heart-warming, inspirational programs that are appropriate for the whole family. If you loved When Calls the Heart as much as I did, pick up the DVD, When Calls the Heart: Lost & Found. And if you haven’t yet had the pleasure of watching this series, this DVD is a great way to see why this show has become so well-loved.
