Beginner’s Guide to SLR Photography ~ DVD Review, Promo Code and Giveaway!

Last Christmas, I received a wonderful Canon EOS 60D camera from Santa Claus … unfortunately, I had no idea how to use it! Just like my old point-and-click, I kept it in Automatic mode, and I became frustrated because my photos didn’t look like anything close to those of the pros. So, I decided it was time to educate myself more about my camera. Thankfully, I was given the opportunity to review the DVD, Beginner’s Guide to SLR Photography, from Photographer Overnight.

Good photography, the DVD explains, is all about lighting, and there are several settings on the camera that control the lighting. The video explained about adjusting the shutter speed, aperture (F-stop) and ISO settings. It moves a little fast for a beginner like me to take notes, so I plan to watch the DVD several more times to make sure I get all the information I need. The info is great, however. I now know what each of the settings means and how they relate to improving the quality of my pictures.

The video also talks about White Balance, RAW vs. JPG files, and various equipment you can purchase for your camera, such as lenses, flashes, and diffusers. You’ll learn how to take pictures in sunshine or shade, when your subjects are moving or still, and the best time to take photos. There are 8 topics, and each includes an assignment after each one that invites you to pause the tape and take some pictures using the skills you’ve just been taught. On the day I watched this video, I didn’t have time to get this done yet, but I plan to head out with my camera soon and experiment with all of the different settings I was taught in the video so I can see how each one affects my picture quality.

I don’t anticipate that I will be a professional photographer anytime soon, but after watching Beginner’s Guide to SLR Photography, I feel that I have a much better understanding of what it takes to improve my pictures and how to use some of the features of my camera. This is a great introductory course for people who are interested in going beyond automatic features to have more control over the quality of their photos.
