About the book:
Things are different between Eleanor and her best friend, Pearl. When a glamorous new student transfers to their school, at first Eleanor’s excited about the possibility of a new friend. But when Pearl is assigned to be the new girl’s buddy, Eleanor fears she can’t compete. To make matters worse, Eleanor has been chosen for the lead role in the springtime musical, which means she has to sing a solo in front of the entire school!
In this third installment from the team that created Like Pickle Juice on a Cookie and Like Bug Juice on a Burger, young readers will once again relate to Eleanor’s growing pains as she copes with everything from stage fright to secret crushes.
On a personal level, this book really appealed to me because Eleanor is in fourth grade, just like my twins, and because I went through a similar experience when I was a child! You see, I had a very best friend in elementary school, and I was devastated when a new girl arrived at our school and “stole” my friend! Sternberg captures perfectly the sense of loss and betrayal when a young girl fears the loss of a dear friend. I could also relate to Eleanor’s stage fright and her fear of losing her puppy when he angers her parents with his misbehavior. (In my case, it was a kitten!) But, of course, this chapter book is intended for children aged 7-10, and they will love reading about Eleanor’s fourth-grade growing pains, which even include a possible crush on a certain boy in class (although she hasn’t quite figured that out yet). Written in first person, Eleanor’s feelings pop from the page and pull readers in to her home and school life. In my review of Sternberg’s first book about Eleanor, I wrote, “Like Pickle Juice on a Cookie is Julie Sternberg’s first novel, but I sincerely hope it’s not her last.” I’m so happy my wish came true, and I hope that young readers (and I) will be able to read many more stories about Eleanor!
P.S. The illustrations by Matthew Cordell are adorable, too!
