Cool Graphic Tees and More from RUUM American Kid’s Wear! (GIVEAWAY)

My twin boys are almost ten years old, and it seems like they’ve been growing like weeds lately. Every time I pull a shirt out of their drawer, it’s gotten too short or too tight on them. So I was thrilled to have the opportunity to review a RUUM boy’s shirt! They specialize in fun graphic t-shirts, but they have plenty of other clothes for kids, too. Check out the adorable “Boys’ Marina Tee” they sent me for review:

When my son, Caleb, and I opened the package and pulled out the shirt, we couldn't resist rubbing it on our faces. It is SO soft! I’ve never felt a t-shirt as soft as this one. Caleb immediately claimed it for himself because it felt so good. I really like the long length since my boys like to wear their shirts untucked, and the anchor motif is adorable. I also like that RUUM’s graphic tees are cute or artistic, not obnoxious like so many of the tees I see at the store. Here are just a few of the other designs I saw on their website:

At RUUM, they also have jeans, leggings, dresses, jackets, sleepwear, underwear, shoes … you get the picture … just about everything to outfit your kids, from babies to pre-teens. Winter’s coming up, and I saw plenty of winter clothing on their site. I’m sure your kids have grown a lot since last year! And the prices at RUUM are fantastic. I saw t-shirts on sale for $3.99! And with a $50 purchase, your shipping is free.

I hope you’ll head over to RUUM to update your child’s wardrobe. You’ll love the clothes and the prices!

Product Review: Signet Complete High Chair from Svan

Although the days of having a baby in the house are gone, I often think back on those wonderful times and all the firsts. Sadie's 6 now, and going in Grade 1 ... EEK! Sometimes I wish she was still small, and then I think how nice it is that she is independent and older and wiser and doesn't need a watchful eye 24/7.

Buying things for a new baby is always fun ... something that I do miss. Lucky for me, I have a younger sister who has 2 kids and wants more, so I still get to spoil her and buy all the neat gadgets coming out. Her youngest is a 6-month-old baby boy, and my favorite nephew so far. (Don't worry ... I only have one.) Hunter is his name, and he has been eating solids now for about a month.

Highchairs are something I remember having a hard time choosing. Some were so BIG, others too wide, too heavy, not portable, not easy to pack for a trip, took up too much space or just looked like eyesores in any room. My husband’s parents ended up buying us one from a catalogue, which did the trick, but again ... it was too big. It was one of those that turned into a table and chairs as the child got older.

Svan (www.svan.com) sent me one of their highchairs to review. It was perfect timing as Hunter was just getting ready to try his first tastes of solid food, and he was getting a bit too big for his other chair. The model I received to review was the Signet Complete in white. I sent it home with them one night and told them good luck. My first question was, "How was the assembly?" My brother-in-law said it wasn't bad at all ... read the instructions and it’s even easier. Oh, men!

We all know how messy baby foods can be, and meal time only gets messier as they become independent and want to feed themselves. My sister loved how easy clean-up was. The high chair is made with non-BPA and non-phthalate materials. It also has a removable plastic tray cover, which is a bonus for clean-up as well. It stores on the back of the seat when you don't need it.

My sister also loved how it blended in with her modern decor. It looked like it belonged and wasn't all gussied up with baby prints. It was easy to move around, and she liked how it can grow with your child. It also pulls up to any standard height table so the baby of the family can join in at mealtime. The felt padding on the base helps with the ease of moving it and doesn’t damage the floors.

The Signet Complete High Chair retails for $260 and is available in 5 neutral colors to fit any home decor. It grows with your baby from as little as 6 months up to young adult. (My sister’s 3-year-old loves it, too.) With the adjustable seat and footrest, you can customize it to fit your baby comfortably. You have the option to buy one of the high-chair cushions, too, for $40, in 7 really cool colors. Svan also has playroom furniture, boosters, cookbooks and more, so check them out at www.svan.com.

Ripley’s Believe It or Not! New Annual, "Dare to Look!," Is More Exciting Than Ever!

Every year, my boys look forward to the publication of the annual Ripley’s Believe It or Not! book. In fact, they are so crazy about Ripley’s that we had to be sure to visit the Ripley’s Museum in St. Augustine when we were there last summer. In the annual books, they love to look at the strange pictures and read the wild facts and stories. I like that they are willingly picking up a book!

This year’s edition is called Dare to Look! The 245 pages in this enormous full-color book feature things like:

Cyclops Goat
Squirrel Stuck in a Manhole
Snowboarding Opossum

Of course, there is much more than animals inside Dare to Look! Weird food, art, feats, sports, popular culture, bodies, and many other sights can be seen. (Justin Bieber’s portrait created out of cheese … let’s hear it for Justin “Brie-ber”!) It appears there’s nothing people won’t do for shock value!

You can also access bonus content by using Ripley’s special ODDscan app. For example, you might scan an image in the book (bonus features are marked by a special logo), which will take you to a video!

This book will be released on September 10, but if you CLICK HERE, you can pre-order it for the special Early Bird price of just $14.99 plus free shipping. That beats Amazon’s price (when I checked it today) by $6!

Are Your Kids Ready to Go Back to School? Have Them Take This Quiz at Ashley Tutors!

My twins just started fourth grade, so we’ve had many “first days” of school. When they first started preschool, it was tough. There were many days of clinging and tears when I tried to leave, especially from one of my boys. Eventually, as they got used to their teacher and school, they loved going to preschool, but I worried that it would be difficult again when they started kindergarten at a new school.

Do these two look happy to start kindergarten?
My strategy was not to make a big deal of the first day of kindergarten. The typical plan for “car riders” is that Mom or Dad drives up to the curb, opens the door, and the child goes out by himself and into the school. They strongly discourage parents from walking kids into school. So, I wasn’t sure what I would do if I threw open the car door on that first day, and one of the boys refused to get out! We’d either be sitting there making a scene, holding up the car line, or I’d have to find a parking space and defy the rules by walking him in. Fortunately, I had nothing to worry about.

I had the twin most likely to cooperate sit closest to the door, and he hopped right out and headed into school. (By the way, it helped that we had gone together to find their classrooms and meet their teachers the previous week.) My other son hesitated, looked at his brother’s retreating back, and then yelled, “Hey, wait for me!” and ran out the door. Success! I think my tires squealed going out of the parking lot as I wanted to make a quick getaway before he realized what he had done. Ever since then we’ve never had trouble with the first day of school.

All kids are different for that first day of school, whether it’s the first day of kindergarten, or they’ve been going to school for years. At Ashley Tutors, I found this really cute quiz that your kids can take to find out if they’re ready to go back to school this fall. So, gather your child in your lap and head over to Ashley Tutors to take the quick 9-question quiz! And if you’re still facing the first day of school this year, I wish you all the best!

The Silver Strand

Ever since twelve-year-old Isabelle Tresdon’s silver strand of hair sprouted, it’s been nothing but trouble: bleeding pink dust and sparking like a firecracker. Refusing to be known as the girl with the freaky, grandma hair, she wishes it never grew and the hair withers and tarnishes.

The only problem is, the strand is Isabelle’s source of magic, and she can transform particles of energy into matter. It’s also her ticket into Mastermind Academy, a secret school inside the earth’s core. Five days remain before the strand drains her magic and life, forcing Isabelle to enter into a deal with two trickster Masterminds to save it. But what she doesn’t count on is there is more at stake than just her life.

The Silver Strand, a middle-grade fantasy adventure for 9-12-year-olds, is Book 1 in the Mastermind Academy series.

Author L.J. Clarkson

One thing you need to know about L.J. Clarkson is that she tells BIG lies. She tells everyone that she gave up her career as an Environmental Engineer and Project Manager to write full time. But that’s not entirely true. Ten percent of the time she sleeps in. Fifteen percent of her day, she spends surfing the internet, researching for new books and her business. Okay, fine. Two percent is for research. But she’s only admitting it so she doesn’t end up like Boldrick. For eighteen point seven five percent of her day, she runs her promotional and support site for authors called Indicated (www.indicated.com.au). The rest of her time involves writing, reading, watching movies and TV, walking her dogs and falling asleep whenever her boyfriend talks technical computer lingo. Truthfully, she hates early mornings, Mondays, grammar (yuck! just ask her poor editor!), broccoli and cleaning. If you would like to drop her a line and let her know what you think of the book, she would love to hear from you. Just not before 8:30 in the morning.

Excerpt

“Did you know Isabelle has a silver alien antenna?” Bigmouth’s voice sang out over the shouts and chatter of the school bus, capturing everyone’s attention. “In science class, a magnet flew out of Mr. Higgins’ hand and stuck to her antenna. How freaky is that?”

Isabelle’s back pressed against her seat.

Bianca leapt up like a jack-in-a-box. Her voice came out as a hiss. “Shut your face, horse mite, or I’ll shut it for you.”

Looked like the bus ride might end in death.

Bigmouth turned to face Bianca. “What if Isabelle’s antenna, like, turns us into alien zombies?”

A chorus of whispers broke out.

Catching the bus was a very bad idea. Isabelle prayed again for that black hole to open up and suck her in. Better yet, she wished it would gobble up the bigmouth. Isabelle tugged on Bianca’s arm and said in a low voice, “Just cut it off.”

Her friend’s eyes softened. “You sure, Boof?”

“The hair’s caused nothing but trouble since it sprouted.” The little voice inside Isabelle’s mind begged her not to, but she didn’t listen.

“Okay.” Something in Bianca’s school bag rattled as she riffled through it. She yanked a pair of scissors free.

Isabelle’s gut clenched as her friend laid the strand between the blades. “Wait!” She suddenly felt unsure about whether to get rid of it. What if it were special and magical like Bianca had said? A magnetic hair, although cool, was hardly magical. Isabelle decided to test it. Closing her eyes, she willed her strand to turn Bigmouth into a toad.

But Bigmouth’s voice still carried throughout the bus. “And in gym class, like, she bled this weird, pink dust.”

“Definitely an alien,” someone nearby agreed.

So much for Isabelle’s strand being magical. “Cut it,” she said, exchanging a sideways look with Bianca.

Her friend squeezed the handles together. Fuchsia-colored sparks shot out and scalded Isabelle’s right cheek. The strand sizzled and hissed like a firecracker, drawing the attention of Bigmouth.

She shrieked like a real girl. “Look! Isabelle’s antenna’s on fire.”

Nature Comes Alive for Kids in Dawn Publication’s Newest Children’s Books

I love the children’s picture books from Dawn Publications because they do such an amazing job of getting kids interested in nature. All of their books have gorgeous full-color illustrations along with an enticing story that gets kids excited about the flora and fauna of our world. This season’s new releases are no exception. Let me tell you about them…

Over in a River: Flowing Out to the Sea
By Marianne Berkes
Illustrated by Jill Dubin

This is a delightful counting and rhyming book that introduces children to manatees, herons, salmon, beavers, and other river animals and their babies. Simple maps show what part of the country these animals can be found. Additional material at the end of the book talks about the importance of rivers and gives more information about the rivers featured in this book. (Did you know that the U.S. has more than 250,000 rivers and Canada has even more?!) More details about the animals in the book, as well as nature-related tips from the author and illustrator, are included. (I love how Jill Dubin shares how she illustrates a book.) Finally, kids can sing along to the words (and accompanying notes, for those who play an instrument) to the song, “Over in a River.”

Noisy Frog Sing-Along
Written and illustrated by John Himmelman

John Himmelman’s previous publication was Noisy Bug Sing-Along, and now kids can sing along to the music of frogs! Only male frogs sing, but boys and girls both will love to peep like a Peeper Frog, plunk like a Green Frog, and growl like a Pickerel Frog! Information at the end of the book introduces readers to many more species of frogs, along with activities, such as looking for tadpoles and getting frogs to eat out of their hand. Kids will have fun doing their best frog imitations while learning about the wonderful qualities of frogs.

Jo MacDonald Hiked in the Woods
By Mary Quattlebaum
Illustrated by Laura J. Bryant

This is another delightful addition to the Jo MacDonald series by Mary Quattlebaum. Jo is actually the granddaughter of “Old MacDonald,” and together she and her grandpa hike in the woods surrounding his farm. Kids can sing along to the familiar “E-I-E-I-O” song but with new lyrics reflecting the nine animals they see or hear in the woods, such as a woodpecker, squirrel, turkey, and even a skunk! At the end of the book, parents and kids can learn more about not only the forest animals, but many of the plants and trees, too. Forest-themed indoor activities, more information about trees, and tips on being a naturalist are included.
