Join the Boys & Girls Clubs of America in Encouraging Kids to Give Back This Holiday Season!

Over the years, I’ve heard a lot about the wonderful things that the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) does to help young people meet their full potential. Their programs help youth with education and careers, leadership and character, the arts, health and life skills, sports and recreation, and much more! They have more than 200,000 volunteers nationwide who are working to make a difference in young people’s lives and help ensure that they’ll grow up to be responsible and fulfilled adults.

As the mother of someone who definitely found his calling in life -- basketball superstar Shaquille O’Neal -- Lucille O’Neal has teamed up with the BGCA to help remind us that the true meaning of the season is not to score the best deal on a new video game or to max out our credit cards on the latest fad. Rather, the holiday season should really be about spending time together as a family and focusing on ways that we can give back to others, whether it’s with our wallets, our time, or both.

This year, the BGCA launched their 2nd Annual Give the Gift of a Great Future Holiday Campaign. I encourage you and your children to visit their Give the Gift of a Great Future website, where you’ll find:

- an interactive Giving Game to easily donate a gift to a Club this season

- a Kids Give Back contest photo gallery where you can vote on your favorite picture of BGCA kids serving their communities

- a list of tips to help you teach your children the value of giving back

Children are never too young to start learning about the importance of giving back. The holiday season is the perfect time to introduce this concept to your family. As the Give the Gift of a Great Future website suggests, talk to your kids about giving, read books about it together, volunteer together -- and make philanthropy one of your family values!

Disclosure: I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for Boys and Girls Clubs of America. I received a promotional item as a thank-you for participating.
