Children’s Book Review and Giveaway: The Reader, by Amy Hest (US/CAN)

The Reader, by Amy Hest and illustrated by Lauren Castillo, takes me back to my childhood, growing up in Michigan, trudging through the snow with big boots and a sled. This book has an adorable twist, however. The little boy will not be sledding. He is going to the top of a hill with his dog so they can read together! On his sled he carries a special suitcase filled with warm drinks and toast, as well as a book ~ Two Good Friends ~ which the boy reads to his best friend, his dog.

I love the author’s simple words; none are wasted. You can almost hear the crunchy toast, the crisp snow, and the blowing wind. And the gorgeous illustrations by Lauren Castillo really bring us into the little boy’s snowy world, where everything seems magical at his young age ~ even a “shivery-cold” winter’s day. To the boy, it’s an opportunity to travel to the “top of the world” ~ or at least a big hill where he can play and read with his dog.

Snuggle up with your little ones at bedtime and enjoy this simple but sparkling adventure where nothing is more pleasurable than a day in the snow with a good book and a dog. The Reader is perfect for holiday giving and reading.

About the Illustrator
Lauren Castillo grew up in small town Maryland, but now spends her time in the bustling borough of Brooklyn, New York, writing and illustrating books for children. 15. Well, I don't have kids but I have to admit I WANT to read the story myself thanks to the way you described it. Then I would pack it up and send it up to Ohio to my friend Melissa who's going to have a baby in January. It's NEVER too early to start reading to your kids (IMO)!!
