Children’s Book Review and Giveaway: We’re All Different but We’re All Kitty Cats: First Day of School, by Peter J. Goodman (3 Winners)

When you’re a kid, being “different” isn’t always good. Sometimes, children can tease or harass those who aren’t like everyone else, tearing down their self-confidence and happiness. So, how can we teach our kids that everyone has their differences and that we’re all special in our own way? An effective way to teach this to young children is through stories that illustrate this lesson in action. We’re All Different but We’re All Kitty Cats: First Day of School, by Peter J. Goodman, is a fun story that encourages children to embrace their differences.

It’s the first day of school for Carlos the kitty, and he’s a little nervous. Unfortunately, his fears are justified when the other children laugh at Carlos because he’s a hairless kitty cat. After school, a bully named Vinny tells Carlos that he can’t be a kitty because he has no fur! Classmates Marla and Flo overhear Vinny’s words, and they tell him to leave Carlos alone and stop hurting his feelings. When he gets home, Carlos tells his mom about the day’s events. She points out his wonderful features and reminds him that every kitty looks different. “One day,” she promises, “you’ll see just how special you are.” In school the next day, Carlos impresses his classmates by reciting the entire alphabet! Everyone realizes that Carlos has his own unique talents.

Discussion questions and fun facts about cats are included at the end of We’re All Different but We’re All Kitty Cats: First Day of School. (Did you know that a cat will almost never meow at another cat? They use this sound almost exclusively for humans!) This book is the first of a planned series that will tackle topics like confidence, empathy, fear, friendship, and more. Learn more about this terrific book at www.kittycatsbook.com. Fun activities for children and resources about bullying for parents can also be found on this site!
