Children’s Chapter Book Review: Rosie and Scamper, by Vicki Watson #cwareviewcrew

Like many young girls, I was “horse crazy” when I was a child. I collected horse figurines (my favorite was a tan stallion that reared up on his hind legs), read horse books (like Misty of Chincoteague and Black Beauty), and even took horseback riding lessons! I was allergic to horses, but that didn’t stop me from wanting to ride them. Even though I no longer ride, I still have a love for horses, so I was excited for the opportunity to review the first book in the Sonrise Stable series by Vicki Watson.

Rosie and Scamper is a children’s chapter book that’s tailor-made for young horse lovers and readers. This Christian book tells the story of eight-year-old Rosie, who loves to spend time at her grandmother’s house and stable. There she has her own pony, Scamper, and she meets Carrie, a foster child down the street. Together, the girls perfect their riding skills, join Rosie’s cousins (all horse lovers) at Grandma’s Cousins Camp, compete at the county fair, and learn lessons about friendship, family, and God. Early in the book, Rosie’s first pony, Jet (Scamper’s mom), is killed by a coyote, and I love how the author has Grandma so gently help Rosie process the tragedy and deal with her emotions. And while Rosie’s family is very close and loving, it’s a good learning experience for kids to see how they welcome and teach Carrie, whose home life is less than perfect. I learned a lot about horses, too!

Rosie and Scamper is Book 1 in the Sonrise Stable series by Vicki Watson (who grew up owning and riding horses, and still does). The author is finishing up the fourth and final book in the series. And if you hurry over to, you’ll see that you can get Book 2, Carrie and Bandit, for free for a limited time! There’s also a contest posted for the chance to win a camera or other prizes. Check out the beautiful horse jewelry, too! I hope you’ll pick up a copy of Rosie and Scamper for the horse lover in your family. It will take your young reader on an interesting and wholesome adventure!
