It all starts with a simple question: “Will you marry me?” Oh, it may be a variation on the theme, such as “Will you be my wife (or husband)?” or simply “Let’s get hitched!” but the simplicity of its beginning remains the same. How rarely we realize what a tidal wave those few words will unleash! As soon as the pact is made, the floodgates open, and lives are changed forever.
There’s just so much to consider…
The Ring -- Will it be a family heirloom or a modern style? Will the bride select the ring or be surprised?
The Dress -- Fluffy, lacy or simple? Will it be made by a designer or follow traditional lines?
The Parents -- Who will pay for the wedding? Will parents and step-parents get along?
The Wedding Party -- How big will it be? And who deserves the honor (or the burden) of “standing up” with the bride or groom?
The Ceremony -- A traditional church wedding, a courthouse ceremony, an elopement, or a destination wedding?
The Honeymoon -- Is it in the budget, and where should the happy couple go?
These are just some of the decisions facing the bride and groom, as well as dozens of family members and friends with varying viewpoints and tastes. At times, the most joyous occasion of our lives can become a re-enactment of the Hatfields vs. the McCoys! Sweet-tempered girls become Bridezillas, and easygoing guys are ready to head for the hills! It’s a process that can test the mettle of any relationship.
But, don’t get me wrong, a wedding can also be the source of glorious memories, long-awaited reunions, and hilarious family tales. You’ll always remember Uncle Billy’s drunken toast or the look in your cousin’s eyes when she reconciled with an estranged sibling. You’ll tell the story again and again about how you received ten toasters as gifts or the groom got lost on the way to the church. Often, mishaps that seemed dire at the time become our most-quoted family lore.
So, grab the tissues and be prepared to wipe away tears of joy and sentiment as you read the 101 stories in this book of marital mishaps and precious moments -- all resulting from that simplest of questions, “Will you marry me?”
