All this week, I’ve been talking about being kind to others, our families, and ourselves. This has all by inspired by Master Lock’s efforts to celebrate National Random Acts of Kindness Week by handing out free locks in six different areas of the country! Their generosity is certainly inspiring, but you really don’t have to look far to see acts of kindness performed. Even books, movies, articles, and TV shows can show great examples of being good to others. Since I’m a writer, I often find inspiration in the words of other writers. Here’s some advice on kindness from some famous authors:
Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.
Today, give a stranger one of your smiles. It might be the only sunshine he sees all day.
~Quoted in P.S. I Love You, compiled by H. Jackson Brown, Jr.
~Mignon McLaughlin, The Second Neurotic’s Notebook
The best portion of a good man’s life -- his little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and love.
You cannot do a kindness too soon, for you never know how soon it will be too late.
~Ralph Waldo Emerson
Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around.
[E]very day you should reach out and touch someone. People love a warm hug, or just a friendly pat on the back.
What about you? Have you watched a movie, read a book, or even listened to a song that inspired you to lend a hand to someone else? Be sure to share these examples with your children! Seek out entertainment that makes kindness a popular thing to do.
