A Healthy and Safe 2012, Plus a Master Lock Giveaway Bonus Entry!

Previously, I shared with you how Master Lock is participating in National Random Acts of Kindness Week. They’ll be handing out free locks and inspirational notes in six different areas of the country! But kindness is also important in our own homes. One way in which you can practice kindness with your family is to teach them how to be more healthy! This may not seem like an obvious “kindness” at first, but helping your kids to grow up to be fit and healthy is one of the best things you can do for them.

My husband is a big advocate of encouraging our children to do things for themselves -- and I agree that’s important -- but one thing I discovered recently that they weren’t quite ready for was making their own lunches. I admit that I hadn’t checked my kids’ lunches in a while because I assumed my husband was supervising them, so I was shocked when I decided to play “inspector” one day! Potato chips, candy, cookies, and fruit rolls made up the bulk of their lunches! No fruit, no veggies … I was appalled! My first step in tackling this problem was making sure that there was plenty of healthy lunch food on hand for my kids. So we went to the grocery store and bought baby carrots, raisins, strawberries, bananas, yogurt, and plenty of other nutritious items. Then I showed them how to make their lunches that night. They were allowed one treat, like some cookies, but the rest of their lunch had to be healthy.

Fortunately, my boys were excited about the “new” items in their lunch, and eagerly included them. And I feel great in knowing that they’re getting some “good stuff” in their lunches. Not only will it make their bodies healthier, but it will help them think better, too! Ask your kids to help you pick out nutritious options for their lunches. Make it an adventure! Performing this “kindness” for your family is a fun way to make 2012 a great year!

  1. I remember growing up, I considered eating "plain" potato chips my health food that day. :) Always good to improve our eating habits!!
