Super Saturday Giveaway Linky (October 1, 2011)

I can’t believe we’re entering the final quarter of the year! I have lots of great reviews and giveaways planned for the upcoming holidays, so stay tuned. If you’re currently running giveaways on your blog or website, please submit them in the linky below. And if you love entering giveaways as much as I do, this list is for you!

The Dog Who Saved Halloween: A New Family Adventure on DVD! #GIVEAWAY

Our family loves holiday movies, and we recently saw a brand-new Halloween adventure: The Dog Who Saved Halloween! This movie is another “tail” in the series that includes The Dog Who Saved Christmas and The Dog Who Saved Christmas Vacation. This time, Zeus the dog must figure out what’s going on in the creepy house down the street! Strange deliveries keep showing up in the middle of the night, and another neighbor’s black cat has mysteriously disappeared. Can Zeus and his nosy owner (played by the funny Gary Valentine) solve the mystery?

The Dog Who Saved Halloween was a great choice for our Family Movie Night! There were plenty of laughs in the movie, and nothing was too scary for the kids. My boys, of course, cheered every time dog poop was mentioned! But there was enough “higher-level” entertainment to amuse the adults, too. This DVD makes a terrific addition to our family’s holiday video collection!

GIVEAWAY

One lucky winner will receive The Dog Who Saved Halloween on DVD! To enter, leave a comment sharing your idea for the title of the next “Dog” movie in this series (i.e., “The Dog Who Saved (Your Idea)?”)! You must do this to enter the giveaway.

Eliminate Laundry Odors Naturally with Fresh Wave Fresh Wash #GIVEAWAY

One of my college-age sons hangs onto his favorite clothes forever, but they get a musty smell from time to time. (Don’t tell him I said that!) When that happens, I sneak some Fresh Wave Fresh Wash into the washer with his clothes, and they come out smelling sweet and clean again. I love this product! Living in Florida, we also use a lot of towels for swimming and going to the beach. My boys tend to stuff them into the laundry basket and throw clothes on top of them, and then everything stinks. Out comes the Fresh Wave Fresh Wash for clean-smelling laundry again!

Fresh Wave Fresh Wash is also great for my front-loading washer. If you own one, you know that a mildew smell can sometimes build up around the rubber gasket on the door. You just rub the Fresh Wave Fresh Wash around the rim of the door with a soft cloth and dry. It smells great again!

But the big “seller” for me with Fresh Wave Fresh Wash, besides being a terrific laundry odor eliminator, is that it’s a natural product. Here are the ingredients directly from the label: water and natural extracts of lime, pine needle, aniseed, clove and cedarwood. That’s it! No artificial chemicals. It works great and smells wonderful! Fresh Wash is just one of the great odor-eliminating products from Fresh Wave. I encourage you to visit www.freshwaveworks.com today to check out their natural products for pet odors, carpet odors, odors in the baby’s room, kitchen and bathroom odors, and much more.

GIVEAWAY

One lucky winner will receive a bottle of Fresh Wave Fresh Wash natural odor eliminator for the laundry! To enter, visit www.freshwaveworks.com and check out the other Fresh Wave products. Leave a comment on this post with the name of another product you’d love to try. You must do this to enter the giveaway.

After fulfilling the mandatory entry above, you can earn optional, additional entries if you:

- Follow @Fresh_Wave and @ParentingAuthor on Twitter, and tweet about this giveaway. You may tweet up to 3x a day. (Please space them at least an hour apart.) Leave a separate comment with the URL of each tweet. (1 entry per tweet)

- Like Fresh Wave on Facebook. (1 entry)

- Like Susan Heim on Parenting on Facebook and/or follow on Networked Blogs. (1 entry for each; leave 2 comments)

- Subscribe to Susan Heim on Parenting via email, RSS, Google Friend Connect and/or Kindle. Leave a comment for each subscription method. (1 entry for each subscription method for up to 4 entries)

- Place a button for Susan Heim on Parenting on your blog and/or a text link on your blog roll. Post a comment with your blog’s URL. (1 entry for button; 1 entry for text link)

- Enter another current giveaway on Susan Heim on Parenting. (1 entry per giveaway entered)

One winner will be randomly selected from the qualified comments received by Friday, October 14, 2011, at 11:59 PM ET. Please leave an email address on one of your comments if it’s not available on your Blogger profile. Winner must respond within 72 hours or another winner will be drawn. Contest is open to US residents only.

CONTEST CLOSED. Congratulations to the winner: JSweeps!

OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover: Newly Reformulated for Extra Stain Removing Power!

I love that my boys play baseball, but I don’t love the stains left on their baseball pants! That red clay from the baseball field is almost impossible to get out. So, when I was offered the opportunity to try OxiClean’s newly reformulated Versatile Stain Remover, I knew immediately what I wanted to try it on. OxiClean unleashes bubbling oxygen to remove stains, and the new OxiClean now has 40% more oxygen power per scoop than the previous version. It’s still safe to use on whites and colors, and has special ingredients to help tackle those vicious sports stains. You can also use it on carpet, upholstery and hard surfaces in your home.

Here’s what my son’s white baseball pants looked like after a recent practice. As you can see, they are very dirty!

Following the directions on the OxiClean tub, I dissolved the OxiClean in warm water in a soaking bin and then immersed the pants. I let them soak for about four hours.

Then I washed the pants as I normally do with my regular detergent in the washing machine. Here’s the result:

Big difference! I can only see a small stain left on one knee, which was a very old stain that’s most likely permanent. Other than that, the pants look amazing! I can’t believe how white and clean they look now. They never looked this nice without the OxiClean.

My seven-year-old boys are pros at staining their clothes with food, grass, dirt, drawing materials, and much more. The new OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover will definitely get plenty of use in our house! Click here to learn more about OxiClean and how it can help you with your family’s tough laundry and household stains. Be sure to grab a coupon while you’re there!

DISCLOSURE: I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour by Mom Central Consulting on behalf of OxiClean and received OxiClean items to facilitate my review and a promotional item to thank me for taking the time to participate.

A Q&A with S. B. Sebrick, Author of the New YA/Fantasy Novel, “Decoy”

What is this book about?

Decoy is a young adult fantasy adventure about an assassin-in-training named Kaltor. He and his friends accidentally release a demon from the Abyss itself and must put their new skills to the test against it, before their beloved city of Shaylis falls to the demon’s wrath. More importantly, it’s a story of Kaltor’s progression from boy to man as he learns to accept his own limits and rely on others to accomplish things he can’t do alone.

How did you get the idea for this book?

It’s honestly pretty tough to pin down a single source that inspired this novel. I’ve been toying with these characters in this world since I was thirteen. Decoy could be thought of as a mixture between the movies “The Mummy Returns” and “The Chronicles of Riddick.” When it comes to other fantasy writers, I’ve always been impressed with the work of J.R.R. Tolkien, Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson, who do an excellent job of creating new, detailed worlds to fully immerse their readers into.

Is this your first book?

Yes, Decoy is the first book I’ve written and put up for sale. I have another couple projects up my sleeve as well, once I finish this series.

When did you start writing? Do you have any advice for beginning writers?

I’ve been interested in creating other worlds and stories ever since I was playing with Legos at ten years old, so I guess writing Young Adult Fantasy was just a natural way for that fascination to evolve into something a bit more lucrative. I advise any beginning writers out there to check out Dean Wesley Smith’s blog about “Killing the Sacred Cows of Publishing.” It changed everything I understood as “typical” in the writing and publishing worlds, and is the reason I took the self-publishing “plunge” in the first place.

Why did you decide to write a book for young adults?

I love writing Epic Fantasy. The ability to create a completely new, detailed world to immerse myself and my readers into is a fantastic experience every time. I particularly chose to focus on the Young Adult market because I have a lot of cousins and friends in that age group, so I wanted to create something they could enjoy.

Do you plan a sequel or future books?

Well, Decoy is part of a series so I’m obviously working on book #2 at the moment. I have some more characters in this same world I want to explore, but they aren’t connected to Kaltor at all. I will lengthen their stories into a series as well when enough readers take interest.

Do you have a website? How can we order this book? Where can we find you?

I have accounts on Facebook and Twitter. Just look up S. B. Sebrick. I have a blog on my website at www.sbsebrick.wordpress.com where Kaltor and I discuss various aspects of life when we aren’t arguing about the differences between our cultures. Decoy is for sale at Amazon and Barnes & Noble for $3.99. Just look up S. B. Sebrick, and that’ll take you right to it.

The Art Institutes Announces the Passion for Fashion Competition to Award Scholarships to Teens Who Love Fashion

With two kids in college, I know the importance of obtaining scholarships to afford an education. Scholarships can significantly reduce your costs and just might influence whether or not attendance at a certain school is possible. I recently heard about a scholarship program for teens who are interested in fashion! The Art Institutes is providing students the opportunity to win a fashion tuition scholarship and a trip to NYC through their Passion for Fashion Competition 2012!

Teens who love to express their love of style are encouraged to enter the contest and unleash their creativity for a chance to earn a tuition scholarship. Two national competition grand prize winners each will receive:

• a half-tuition scholarship to their respective Art Institutes school
• a VIP trip to New York City
• participation in a “meet and greet” at Seventeen magazine’s New York City offices
• lunch with a Seventeen Style Pro
• a $500 shopping spree at DKNY with the Style Pro
• a $500 gift card to shop anywhere in the Big Apple

Wow! What an amazing opportunity for a teen who dreams of a career in fashion. The video below will tell you more about The Art Institutes’ Passion for Fashion Competition:

THE SEARCH IS ON TO FIND TEENS WITH A PASSION FOR FASHION

Ten Tips for De-cluttering and Organizing Your Child’s Room

My twins’ room is one of the toughest places in my house to keep clutter-free! Toys, books, trading cards and much more all vie for limited space. We live in Florida, so we don’t have a basement to store the overflow. And my boys must room together for now because we don’t have enough bedrooms to separate them. So, I’ve had to come up with some simple ways of organizing all the “stuff” in my kids’ room. Here are some of the things I’ve done that might help you out, too!

1. Get a bookshelf. We have a rule: If the bookshelf is overflowing, it’s time to weed some out and donate them to a used bookstore or a younger child. We recently purchased the bookshelf shown below, and I got rid of almost all of my boys’ picture books now that they’re reading chapter books.

2. Give your kid a “junk drawer.” My boys love to collect “treasures,” like coins and rocks and little toys, but they always seemed to end up strewn across the dresser top. To eliminate that problem, I gave each boy a designated “junk drawer,” where he can put his little treasures. They can still keep their stuff, but now I don’t have to look at it all the time!

3. Use bunk beds. If you have more than one child in a room, consider bunk beds so they have more room. My boys love their bunk beds! We purchased a model with extra storage drawers underneath so we have even more room to store their stuff and cut down on clutter.

4. Store items in bins. There are some colorful and unique bins available now that will not only hold your children’s Legos and other small items, but they look really cute in their room! Get ones that stack to really conserve space.

5. One toy at a time. Teach kids to put away what they’re playing with before they can get out another toy. If my boys ask to play video games, for example, they’re not allowed to do so until they put away the board game they were playing with.

6. Install multiple bars in the closet. Children’s clothes don’t normally reach all the way from the closet bar to the ground, so install double bars for more places to hang clothes. The ones we use have a shelf on top, which gives us even more storage space!

7. Vacuum or sweep at least weekly. You can’t clean a floor that’s loaded with toys. When you make a commitment to vacuum or sweep at least once a week, it forces you and your children to pick up the items on the floor and put them away. And it’s much easier to pick up a week’s worth of clutter than a month’s worth!

8. A toy box is a must. Toy boxes have been in use for a long time, and for a good reason: They contain clutter! But be sure to clean out your toy box every few months or all the toys at the bottom will never get played with.

9. Rotate toys. Put some toys in a box and put them away in storage. Swap them out every few months with something else in your child’s room. Your child will feel like he has new toys every time you switch boxes!

10. Get creative. Look for toys that make creative use of space like these Hot Wheels Wall Tracks! It takes racing off the floor and onto the walls -- a space that’s rarely used anyway. What fun!

I hope these tips can help you eliminate the clutter in your child’s room and get organized. In most cases, they’re easy to do, but can make a huge difference in approving the appearance and functionality of the room.

Conquer Sleep Deprivation with the ZAZOO Photo Clock!

Do you have a little early riser in your house? One of the biggest sources of sleep deprivation for parents of toddlers and preschoolers is early rising. Little ones can’t tell when it’s time to get up in the morning, so they often pop out of bed too early, disrupting everyone’s sleep. I love the ZAZOO Photo Clock because it’s designed to help eliminate this problem! It can be programmed to show a “daytime photo” during certain times of the day and a “nighttime photo” during others. So, if you’d like your child to get out of bed at 8:00 AM, for example, you can set the “daytime photo” to show on the screen at that time. If your child wakes up at 7:00 AM and sees the “nighttime photo,” he understands that it’s too early to wake his family and will (hopefully) go back to sleep! You can also set a picture for naptimes.

The ZAZOO Photo Clock comes in several fun designs, like those below.

And it has some other fantastic features, too! For example, it can be used as a digital photo frame. Just upload your own photos into the clock, and it will rotate them like a slide show. Here are a couple of photos we put in our ZAZOO Photo Clock!

You can even select your own photos as a “daytime” or “nighttime photo.” For example, take a picture of your child sleeping for the “nighttime photo,” and another picture of your child playing or eating breakfast for the “daytime photo”! You can also play music and videos on the ZAZOO Photo Clock, and it comes with a cute little remote control! This video shows all of its amazing features:

The ZAZOO Photo Clock is awesome. I can see why it won awards from The National Parenting Center and the Parent Tested Parent Approved organizations this year! Visit www.zazookids.com to learn more about the ZAZOO Photo Clock, and how it can help your child develop better sleeping habits.

Join the LIFE Foundation to Support Life Insurance Awareness Month Through the “Insure Your Love Picture Mosaic”

As an editor for Chicken Soup for the Soul, I read a lot of true stories about families that are severely impacted by illness and loss. Reading about other people’s experiences makes me grateful for my blessings, but also causes me to consider the consequences if something tragic happened in my own family. This is a subject that everyone should think about, especially if they have young children. Who will care for them if we can’t? And how will their needs be met? Fortunately, my husband and I have purchased life insurance, which will make life just a little bit easier for our children if something happens. But it saddens me to know that 11 million U.S. households with children under the age of 18 have no life insurance coverage (LIMRA study).

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month, which makes it the ideal time to think about protecting your family in the event of a loss. The nonprofit LIFE Foundation has created an “Insure Your Love Picture Mosaic” to applaud those families who have made the decision to purchase life insurance. People who visit the LIFE Foundation’s Facebook fan page are encouraged to upload up to 20 photos of their loved ones to celebrate the fact that their financial future has been safeguarded by their decision to purchase life insurance.

And by participating in the “Insure Your Love Picture Mosaic,” you’re also supporting a great cause. For each photo uploaded, $1 will be donated to the LIFE Lessons Scholarship Program to provide tuition assistance to students who have lost a parent and need help in financing their dream of a college education.

I hope you’ll seriously consider purchasing life insurance to protect your family if you haven’t done so already. And please visit the LIFE Foundation’s Facebook page to upload your photos, support those who have chosen to protect their families, and help provide scholarships to children who have lost a parent.

DISCLOSURE: I will receive a gift card as a thank-you for participating in this promotional program with the LIFE Foundation and MomSelect.

Fieldcrest Comforel Silky Soft Pillows with Dacron: A Comfortable Alternative to Down!

When I was a child, I loved to sleep at my grandmother’s house because she had real down pillows! They were so soft to sleep on, but unfortunately I’d always wake up with a stuffy nose because I was allergic to them! Now I can get the feel of a down pillow without the stuffiness thanks to my new Fieldcrest® Comforel® Silky Soft® Down Alternative Pillow from Target.

The filling is 100% DACRON® Comforel® Silky Soft® fiberfill, which is a high-quality alternative to natural fibers. Not only are they hypoallergenic, but they’re washable and are available at a fraction of the price of down pillows! These Fieldcrest pillows are available in two sizes: King and Queen/Standard. They retail for $29.99 - $39.99 per pair at Target!

I’ve been sleeping very comfortably each night with this pillow. My husband prefers a firmer pillow, but he uses his Fieldcrest® Comforel® Silky Soft® Down Alternative Pillow between his knees so they don’t rub together when he sleeps on his side. We’re both very impressed with these pillows. Look for them at your local Target store or on Target.com!
