Book Review and Giveaway: Asthma Allergies Children: A Parent’s Guide

When I was a kid, I suffered from allergies. Pollen, dust, cats and horses were the major culprits. I was heartbroken when my parents gave our cat, Penelope, away to another family. Back then, my parents didn’t have a lot of resources for learning about my allergies, other than discussions with our doctor. Today’s parents are fortunate to have much more information, especially in the book, Asthma Allergies Children: A Parent's Guide, by Paul Ehrlich, MD, and Larry Chiaramonte, MD, with Henry Ehrlich. In conjunction with the website, AsthmaAllergiesChildren.com, parents can find a wealth of information about their children’s allergies, as well as asthma.

In very easy-to-understand terms, Asthma Allergies Children defines allergy and asthma, and expands on topics such as food allergies, skin allergies, allergy testing, medications, immunotherapy, traditional and alternative treatments, the environment, and much more. Real-life stories from the authors’ patients are also included. It’s a very comprehensive guide that every parent with an allergic or asthmatic child should read.

Visit AsthmaAllergiesChildren.com to learn more about this valuable book, as well as ground-breaking news in the field of allergies and asthma.

Eco-Modern Furniture at a Sustainable Price

Guest post by Jimmy Chiang
Founder and CEO of Way Basics

Tearing what we know of conventional furniture at the seams, Way Basics has found a way to reuse the most basic of resources (paper) and turn it into useful, everyday furniture.

Way Basics uses post-consumer recycled paper and builds it into sustainable furniture at an extremely affordable price. (Their most popular item, the Cube, retails for $20.00.) Many times when people change their living situation, their furniture ends up in a landfill. With Way Basics, there’s no headache and no worries because at the end of its life, simply recycle it. It might wind up back at Way Basics to live again!

With many Americans choosing to live a more sustainable lifestyle, Way Basics is challenging conventional thinking by streamlining their business efforts. “We’ve even simplified our assembly process. It’s literally as easy as 1, 2, 3, peel, stick, done,” says Jimmy Chiang, founder and CEO of Way Basics.

From the way that Way Basics conducts business to the everyday aspects of their lives, they believe in taking things back to the basics. Way Basics provides the basic elements to build a more sustainable lifestyle for its family, friends, and customers.

Many furniture makers take advantage of particle board to construct their products. During the manufacturing of particle board and MDF, formaldehyde is used in order to get the wood chips and fibers to adhere to each other. This produces what is known as “off-gassing,” which is a toxic process. Other toxic chemicals such as phosphoric acid and cyanide are commonly used as well.

Way Basics is using a truly revolutionary manufacturing process where no “off-gassing” occurs; there are no VOCs and literally zero toxic chemicals used.

“There are a lot of people who are very concerned with what their products are made of these days,” says Chiang. “That’s why we are so proud of what we are doing and why we are so passionate about Way Basics. It’s made of paper!”

Way Basics believes in conducting business the same way as many of us are now choosing to live our lives: mindful of the future.

“Our resources are finite,” says Chiang. “If we don’t take the initiative to be responsible, then who will? We want to do things the right way. It’s time to challenge the old ways of thinking; out with the old, in with the new.”

Music Review and Giveaway: Bobby Long, A Winter Tale

It’s always exciting to find a new musical artist to follow. Thanks to Music Moms, I recently discovered Bobby Long! The first thing that got my attention was when I heard that he wrote the song “Let Me Sign,” which was sung by Robert Pattinson in the Twilight movie! But Bobby Long isn’t just a talented songwriter; he’s also a fantastic singer and guitarist. Check out these poetic lyrics from the title song of his debut album, A Winter Tale:

The covered surface hugs the board but keeps in the sky,
A childhood glimpse that keeps you warm but hangs you to dry,
The shameful dream the shameful face that pulls on your heart,
Those brittle winds will keep the dawn from you at the start,
So bring me choirs to ease me on my way,
Bring me screams of organs for the day,
Bring me choirs to brighten all the gales,
Bring me screams of organs and the wails,
Of winter tales.

And watch this video clip with Bobby Long as he talks about his career and introduces some of the music on A Winter Tale:

Book Review: Pins on a Map, by David Boesch

I’ve always loved to travel. Before the age of 18, I’d been to Canada, Japan, England and France. But then I went to college, got married and started having kids, and somehow my travel experiences ground to a screeching halt! Trips to see the grandparents and Disney World are all we’ve been able to manage with children. So, I was in awe when I heard that David Boesch and his wife Jill decided to take their three kids -- ages 7, 10 and 13 -- on a trip around the world in a year! Six continents, 17 countries and 345 days… what guts!

Boesch vividly and humorously describes his family’s adventures in his book, Pins on a Map: A Family's Yearlong Journey Around the World. Not surprisingly, their travels involved a mix of good and bad experiences. Daughter Cami even broke her leg in Japan! But despite the mishaps, miscalculations, and monkey attacks, the family found a new appreciation of the world we live in -- and each other. Boesch is unfailingly honest in his depiction of the people they met and the places they visited. Countries they expected to love were sometimes disappointing, while preconceived negative opinions about certain places were often disproved.

If you’ve ever dreamed of taking your family on a trip around the world (or just want to do so vicariously), you must read Pins on a Map. This entertaining and interesting book is well worth the read.

A Special Little Boy Has a Roaring Good Time with His New Lion!

As you probably know by now, I’m a huge fan of the Teddy Bear Wish Program founded by Teddy Bears Personalized. Through this program, they donate personalized teddy bears and other plush animals to children who could really use an extra pick-me-up.

Recently, Teddy Bears Personalized sent a very special personalized lion to a little boy named Gabriel. Here’s what his mom, Patti, told us: “Our youngest son pretends he is a lion and roars a lot to indicate how he’s feeling, which is especially meaningful to us as he is autistic and doesn’t speak.” Here’s a picture of Gabriel with his beautiful new lion:

Patti, who writes about her family and her love of contests at The World of Contest Patti, sent this note with the photo: “Gabriel is practically living with his lion glued under his arm! It’s wonderful to see him so engaged.” I am so thrilled that little Gabriel was able to benefit from this wonderful program.

If you know a child who would be cheered by a personalized teddy bear or plush animal (perhaps a little one with a life-threatening illness or who is going through an especially difficult life event), please send an email with your candidate and a short message of why you would like to see him/her receive a free Personalized Teddy Bear to giveaways@personalizedteddy.com. And please help Teddy Bears Personalized to be able to continue with this awesome program by ordering from them for your next gift-giving occasion!

If Plain Water Leaves You Cold, Try twist!

I know I should be drinking more water, but I really don’t like the taste of it. Thus, I usually end up drinking soda or juice or something equally fattening. So, I was thrilled to learn about organic twist water because it tastes amazing! twist is a natural blend of premium water and a twist of juice, sweetened with organic agave nectar. There are no artificial ingredients or flavors. The six tasty flavors include:

Mandarin White Tea
West Indies Lime
Mango Acai
Wild Strawberry
Lemon
Pomegranate Blueberry

I received a sample of the Mandarin White Tea and the Mango Acai, and they were both absolutely delicious! They had a full, hearty flavor that I love, but with only 9 calories apiece.

If you or your kids have an aversion to regular water, or just want to try something new that tastes awesome but won’t add to your waistline, I recommend that you try twist water! I’m really looking forward to trying the other flavors. Visit www.drinktwist.com to find a retailer near you!

Product Review: Kim & Scott’s Gourmet Stuffed Pretzels

Before I tell you all about Kim & Scott’s Gourmet Stuffed Pretzels, let me just get this out of the way: These pretzels are AMAZING! These all-natural soft pretzels contain premium ingredients like unbleached flour, whole grains, hearty spices, and fresh cheese. But, even better in my book, they are absolutely delicious!

I received samples of the following stuffed pretzel flavors:

- Grilled Cheese
- Pizza
- Apple Cinnamon
- Chocolate Crumb
- Cheddar Jalapeño
- Spinach Feta

They are so easy to prepare. I took them straight from the freezer to the microwave oven, and in less than a minute I had a soft, warm and scrumptious pretzel. I really love that they’re stuffed with wonderful ingredients. I had the Pizza pretzel for lunch today, which was generously stuffed with real mozzarella cheese and homemade sauce. Last night, I had the Apple Cinnamon pretzel for dessert, which was stuffed with homemade apple filling. It was like eating an apple pie fresh from the oven. Yum! My hubby has completely devoured the Cheddar Jalapeño and Spinach Feta pretzels, and the kids love the Chocolate Crumb and Grilled Cheese flavors. There really is a flavor for every family member!

Kim & Scott’s Gourmet Stuffed Pretzels are and/or contain:

- All-natural
- Premium ingredients
- Microwavable
- Source of whole grains
- Made in a nut-free facility
- Twisted by hand

Oh Katy One Size Pocket Diapers: Review and Giveaway

Cloth diapers have come a long way, so I have been told. When my mother used them, they were a flannel sheet with diaper pins that you had to soak in the toilet and use bleach to get them clean and white again. As I researched cloth diapers, I was very surprised to see how many patterns and colors there are to choose from. And not only color options, but inserts, closures, material, organic, boys, girls … and so many more choices! I am sad to say that I did not use cloth diapers for my daughter, Sadie. I think it was just becoming the thing to do, and now the cloth diaper business is booming. My sister, who had her first child in June, has used cloth diapers and loved every minute of it. She was the lucky tester of the Oh Katy One Size Pocket Diaper that was sent to me for review.

These One Size Pocket Diapers come in nine fun colors. They are bright and cheerful, and very hard to pick a favorite! What my sister liked most about these diapers (and she has tried a million out...) was that they fit great over Gracie’s legs. Gracie has cute, little, chubby baby legs, and sometimes the diapers can be quite tight-fitting. She loved the color choices, and she also liked how the snap closure laid flat against the sides of the diaper so they didn’t dig into Gracie’s legs. The soft microfiber fleece is soft against babies’ skin so no irritation occurs. Each diaper comes with one adjustable insert, as well as one newborn insert, making cloth diapering easy from Day 1. Oh Katy Cloth Diapers retail for $17.95 and fit babies from 8 lbs all the way up to 35 lbs.

Oh Katy gets two thumbs up for no leaks, easy to wash, and an easy wear from my sister! Check them out at www.ohkaty.com.

Children’s Book Review: The Secret Life of Mitch Spinach, by Hillary Feerick and Jeff Hillenbrand

Mitch Spinach is no ordinary kid. He has a custom-made backpack with temperature-controlled refrigeration to hold purified water, flax seeds, and organic fruits and vegetables. His “Nutripak” also contains a blender so Mitch can make healthy smoothies for lunch every day out of the fruits and veggies in his pack. And Mitch is clearly smarter and healthier than the other kids in his class. He even gets called on by the principal to solve mysteries because he’s so smart!

In The Secret Life of Mitch Spinach, somebody has been making a huge mess in the janitor’s closet. The principal knows that his smartest student, Mitch Spinach, can solve the mystery -- and he does! At the end of the book, Mitch rewards himself with a trip to the Power Foods Market to pick out more healthy foods with his mother.

Also included in The Secret Life of Mitch Spinach are Q&As for parents and teachers so they can answer their kids’ questions about nutrition. For example, it features the question, “Do carrots enhance vision?” There’s even a recipe for Mitch Spinach’s Super Smoothie!

Reading The Secret Life of Mitch Spinach with your kids is a very fun way to teach them about the importance of eating well without being preachy. Children learn that they can become faster and smarter thanks to the foods they put into their body. And they’ll also enjoy the exciting story of Mitch Spinach as he solves a mystery! Visit www.MitchSpinach.com to learn more about this book and find out how a portion of the book sales can be donated to your children’s school or organization. Games, recipes, and resources for parents and teachers are also provided.
