1. Change your perspective. When Sally Dixon’s job as a pastry chef turned out to be stressful and not the wonderful opportunity she’d expected, she wallowed in self-pity. But when she changed her attitude by committing to do the best job she could “for the glory of God,” she discovered that her efforts weren’t a waste of time. She was able to find satisfaction in a job well done and find purpose in her work.
2. Shift your priorities. Jennie Bradstreet’s young son was exhibiting poor behavior due to the stress of dealing with his father’s cancer and the changes it brought to their household. When Jennie first got the idea to encourage her son to let off steam by smashing her kitchen dishes, she resisted the destruction of her property -- until she realized that her son’s emotions and wellbeing were of greater value than any material thing.
3. Hand over your burdens. Kathleen Kohler was devastated by her son’s involvement with drugs and gangs. But the more she relinquished her need to control an uncontrollable situation, the more she saw signs of “God’s protective hand” on her son’s life. She realized that though others had given up on her son, his Heavenly Father never would. This discovery brought about an “underlying peace in the midst of the turmoil.”
4. Reach out to others. When Rita Billbe’s teenage son died, her first instinct was to hide at home and avoid contact with her son’s friends, who only reminded her of her loss. But when she forced herself to attend a high school baseball game, she received a precious gift from her son’s teammates: enormous love and strength from every hug they doled out. It was a “line-up” that she would never forget.
5. Count your blessings. Lindy Schneider was devastated when her husband’s new job meant a move to another state. All she could focus on was their losses: leaving behind treasured friends and family, losing their home, pulling her children from their schools. But a bus trip directed her attention to the beautiful bougainvilleas at the side of the road. Suddenly, she was looking for -- and finding -- those bright pink flowers everywhere! And every sighting of bougainvilleas in her new state reminded her of the blessings that still bloomed in their lives.
