Get Ready for Kindergarten with Dinosaur Train! (Super Prize Pack Giveaway)

August is “Get Ready for Kindergarten Month”! Heading to kindergarten can be a stressful transition for children, even if they went to preschool. In most cases, they’ll be getting accustomed to new surroundings, routines and expectations! However, many things can be done to help prepare children for this big milestone in their lives. The Jim Henson Company and PBS KIDS have included some fun ideas from the award-winning Dinosaur Train website at www.pbskids.org/dinosaurtrain that will help children familiarize themselves with and build upon some specific skills, while at the same time enjoying their favorite characters!

Practice reading and speaking. Help your child practice the letters of the alphabet while learning, speaking and singing about the diversity of dinosaurs that once lived on Earth with the “Dinosaurs A to Z song.” Have fun learning about letters and dinosaurs HERE.

Learn about color. Help your child understand, investigate and make predictions about the science of color, using household basics like food coloring, clean food jars/containers, colored markers and a cookie sheet. Click HERE for details.

Develop fine motor skills such as coloring, cutting, drawing, buttoning, zippering, and building. With Buddy’s help, you can practice some of these skills while making a Stegosaurus Puppet! Click HERE for details.

Practice gross motor skills such as running, jumping and throwing. Try “Playing Dino Ball Your Way” to improve these skills -- and get some exercise, too -- by inventing the rules for an imaginary game and then playing it! Find details HERE.

Explore size and scale. Using illustrations and physical markers, kids can measure out size differences in large dinosaurs to understand their size and scale! Check out the activity “Even Bigger Than T.rex!” HERE and have some fun while learning about size.

Now, here are some “Get ready for kindergarten” shopping ideas to help build on some of the above skills or just for play and fun:

When getting your child ready for Kindergarten, it is important to bring you child to the school for the registration day offered usually in May or June. They usually have activites for the kids to do. These days get kids really excited about going to school. Also, in the summer, take your child to the playground at the school to get them used to the surroundings. If you always speak positively about going to school and make it sound exciting, your child will make the transition easily.

  59. i have 5 kids, 3 are in elementary school and when they started k we would take them out to buy their own alarm clock. sounds like something simple and basic for most families but its something the kids liked to do. we also start the earlier bedtimes about 3 days prior to school starting. 2 nights before we go through and make sure they have everything they need and all their backpacks are ready.its a pretty basic transition for us.

  62. HI Susan!
I think my best tip for transitioning back to school is to make kids a part of the process by letting them help choose supplies, clothing, and preparing them ahead of time. Also I think by continuing educational activities and keeping decent bedtimes throughout the summer months so it's not such a shock. :)
Thanks so much for the opportunity to win in this giveaway!

  126. I used to take my kids on a walk through in the school and point out their classrooms and the bathrooms, so it won't seem so scary.

  141. My best tip is to sign your children up for Pre-K before they start kindergarten and to keep practicing what they already know and teach them some new things during the summer to keep them prepared.

  179. One should always practice and prepare with their children...especially the leary ones...if, say, for a week prior you go through the routine, then by school it should have a better flow for your wee one...heavensent1@yahoo dotcom
