If you’re interested in learning more about your family history, here are some easy steps to begin with from Ancestry.com:
1. Start with what you know. Simply enter a few details about yourself, your parents and grandparents into an online family tree. Don’t worry if you don’t have all the facts. This is just the beginning.
2. Search historical records. A simple online search could help you find family members in historical censuses, military and immigration records, newspaper articles and more. Use these records to continue tracing your story back through time. And stay organized by adding what you discover to your online family tree.
3. Ask your family for more details. Family history can be a wonderful excuse to pick up the phone or pay a visit to your loved ones. Ask your relatives for stories, photos and other knowledge about your heritage. Search family photo albums and heirlooms for missing details.
4. Add context to your story. Attach photos, stories and other important documents to your online family tree. Create timelines of your ancestors’ lives. Record interviews with relatives by phone and save them to your tree using tools like the Ancestry.com Storytelling Service.
5. Share your discoveries. Share your rich heritage with your family and document your family history journey by creating a book, calendar, poster or another meaningful gift.
Ancestry.com has more than 6 billion records, and more than 1.6 members who are creating family trees. You can find census records; immigration and naturalization records; birth, marriage and death records; military records; international records; newspapers; and much more!
I could go on and on about all of the wonderful services that are available at Ancestry.com, but I encourage you to go to Ancestry.com yourself to see what they have to offer. Enjoy a free 14-day trial! After that, you can subscribe for just $69 for six months of access to the U.S.-focused collection or take a look at the other packages offered. The best one offers worldwide access for 12 months for $299. Ancestry.com also offers both MAC and PC versions of their Family Tree Maker software package. And at http://ancestry.mycanvas.com, you can incorporate your findings into photo books, family history books, family tree posters, and much more. What great gifts these would make for members of your family!
And speaking of gifts, Father’s Day is almost here. Forget the cologne and t-shirts. Get a special guy a subscription to Ancestry.com! What an amazing and unique gift it would make for a favorite father, grandfather or uncle. You can learn more about Ancestry.com through the following links:

I have recently been working on our family tree. I found information on my grandfather, who was adopted when he was two. What is kind of cool is that my non-biological great grandfather and I were both born on 2/26.
ReplyDeleteI have been working on my family tree for a quite a while. No famous relatives, but I learned that my great-grandfather came to the US from Lithuania more than 100 years ago. Pretty cool, I think!

ReplyDeleteMy 8 year old and I been working on our ancestry for a school assignment for her. We found family that fought on both sides of the Civil and Revolutionary wars, which was pretty interesting. Some made it through the wars, others didn't. How fascinating to have cousins fighting on opposite sides of a war, which happened several times in our family. Very opinionated folks!
ReplyDeleteI would LOVE to win this! Yes, my relatives are all from other countries. My parents emigrated to the US before I was born. As far as famous relatives, I have a very famous cousin in South America (present day) and my grandfather was a very famous international actor of the 1950s and 1960s. My grandfather was married several times and had children in his other marriages that I've never met. I'd love to track those aunts/uncles/cousins down.

I've done quite a bit of research on my family and as a result was able to visit the village in Russia where my grandmother was born and pin it down to the exact house. It had been a dream of mine to visit there! I also found out that one of the lines on my mothers side fought for the British in the American Revolution!

I have been doing genealogy for many years. My first cousin twice removed was Aileen Allen. She competed in the 1920 Olympics in Fancy Diving placing 4th. She also made 6 movies in Hollywood. In some of them she swam. She also discovered Esther Williams. Now who in my family forgot to tell me about Aileen? Ancestry.com helped me find her for which I am truly grateful.
