Book Review: Beside Still Waters, by Tricia Goyer

I’ve always had a fondness for Amish fiction. Even though the stories and characters are products of the author’s imagination, the details about Amish life are usually accurate. It fascinates me to read about a lifestyle that is so different from my own in the “Englisch” world. Beside Still Waters, by bestselling author Tricia Goyer, gives a compelling portrayal of life in an Amish community, accompanied by a heart-warming story about a young Amish woman who is trying to figure out who she is and where she belongs.

On the day that Marianna Sommers was born, her two older sisters died in a horrible accident. Even though she was too young to remember it, the incident emotionally scarred Marianna for life because she felt inadequate to take the place of her beloved sisters. As a result, Marianna tries to be an obedient Amish daughter to spare her parents further pain. Her older brother, on the other hand, rebels against the Amish life and leaves their community. Just as Marianna is on the brink of becoming engaged to Aaron Zook, whom she has loved since childhood, her father announces that they are heading west to Montana. Marianna is torn between her blossoming relationship with Aaron and her loyalty to her family, which now consists of many more siblings (with another one on the way).

With a heavy heart, Marianna decides to go to Montana to help her family get settled in and then return “home” later, but she finds that Montana is not the wretched place she had expected. Although her new Amish community is smaller and less strict, Marianna finds that their lifestyle and the beautiful surroundings appeal to her. But her life is complicated by her growing feelings for an Englischer named Ben and her waning relationship with Aaron at home. Needless to say, Marianna has an important choice to make about her future…

I fell in love with the very human characters in Beside Still Waters. They were not perfect by any means, and they struggled with the many complexities of life, as we all do. This story also explored Christian themes, particularly about what it means to have a relationship with God. And, of course, a little romance thrown in always warms my heart! I highly recommend this book, and I’m excited to read the next book in this new series by Tricia Goyer. CLICK HERE to read more about Beside Still Waters on the author’s website.
