Children’s Book Review and Giveaway: Where’s Walrus? by Stephen Savage

Where's Walrus? by Stephen Savage is one of my new favorite children’s books! An amazing thing about this picture book is that there are no words at all, and yet it brilliantly tells a delightful story. In the book, a very clever walrus escapes from the zoo, and it’s up to the zoo keeper to find him! But the walrus manages to conceal himself by donning the hats of various people and things in the city. For instance, he sports a fashionable red hat and hides with the mannequins in a store window! And he puts on a yellow hard hat to blend in with the construction workers building a brick wall. I love when he puts on a swim cap and jumps off the diving board in a swim meet! Of course, this accomplished swimmer earns a perfect score. His feat earns the walrus a new and better home at the zoo, complete with his own diving pool!

The video below is just as amusing as the book because it shows the author/illustrator, Stephen Savage, drawing the walrus, who escapes when he turns his back! Please watch:

I also love how Where’s Walrus? encourages interaction with the story. While “reading” it, your child has to figure out just what the walrus is up to! When you look at the pictures together, you can ask your child questions like, “Who is the walrus pretending to be now?” and “Can you find the walrus?” And the book even gives a subtle lesson about ensuring desirable facilities for zoo animals.

Where’s Walrus? is destined to become a classic and should be in every children’s storybook collection!
