Book Review: The Pink Locker Society: Best Kept Secret, by Debra Moffitt

Last year, I reviewed a terrific book for upper elementary and middle school girls called The Pink Locker Society: Only Girls Allowed, by Debra Moffitt. Now, the adventures continue for Jemma, Kate, Piper, and Bet in the new book, The Pink Locker Society: Best Kept Secret! In the first book, these middle school girls were unexpectedly recruited for membership in the Pink Locker Society (PLS). Their mission was to help other students with the PBBs -- periods, bras, and boys. Unfortunately, word leaked out about their existence, and they were shut down by the principal! It was a huge disappointment for the girls, but things are now looking up in Book 2.

The girls are once again operating the PLS in secret in The Pink Locker Society: Best Kept Secret, but will they be able to continue? Threatening emails from an unknown source are pressuring them to cease operations once again, but the girls aren’t to be cowed this time. And if that weren’t enough to rock their world, Jemma’s secret crush, Forrest, has just been asked by her best friend, Piper, to the Backwards Dance! Will Jemma finally have the courage to tell Forrest how she feels? And will her friendship with Piper survive this betrayal?

This book covers realistic issues that girls face in middle school -- puberty, crushes, friendship, jealousy, and moral dilemmas. I gave my copy of The Pink Locker Society: Only Girls Allowed to my friend’s fifth-grade daughter, and she really related to the events in the book. I know she’s going to love Best Kept Secret, too! A fun and breezy read, this is the perfect book for the girls in your life. They can also visit www.PinkLockerSociety.org for fun crafts, polls, activities, and even a Q&A section where they can ask their own top-secret questions about the PBBs. I can’t wait to read the third book in the series, The Pink Locker Society: The Forever Crush, when it comes out in May 2011!
