Celebrate the Release of Book 8 of “The 39 Clues” Book Series with a Great Giveaway!

To celebrate the April 6, 2010, release of Book 8 in the fabulous series of books called The 39 Clues, I’m pleased to be able to offer an amazing giveaway to my readers!

First, if you’re not acquainted yet with The 39 Clues series, for ages 8-12, here’s what it’s all about:

The 39 Clues is a series of adventure books published by Scholastic. The main part of the series consists of ten books about the adventures of siblings Amy and Dan Cahill. They agree to the challenge in their grandmother Grace Cahill’s will and search for 39 clues scattered around the world.

The 39 Clues is a groundbreaking, multi-media adventure series that spans 10 adrenaline-charged books, hundreds of collectible cards, and an online game that allows readers to play a part in the story and compete for prizes. (My sister told me that her son really enjoys the game!) Another interesting fact is that these books have different authors. Book 1 of The 39 Clues series, called The Maze of Bones, was written by Rick Riordan, who also wrote the best-selling series, Percy Jackson & the Olympians. Book 1 of that series, The Lightning Thief, was recently made into a movie! And this is really cool: Movie rights for The 39 Clues have been acquired by DreamWorks Studios with Steven Spielberg eyeing to direct!

On April 6, 2010, Scholastic will be releasing Book 8 in the series. Fortunately, a video has just surfaced that shows reporter William Michaels in an exclusive interview with Gordon Korman, author of Book 8: The Emperor’s Code. Gordon reveals extraordinary information: There are vital hints concealed in the artwork on the cover of Book 8 that could expose the location of the next clue! Examine the artwork carefully, and your family could find out where the Book 8 clue is hidden! Check out the interview in this video:

(Email subscribers: You may need to click on the title of this post to access the video on my blog.)

To learn more about this amazing series, visit www.the39clues.com. You can also pre-order the book on Amazon. Scholastic is sending me the first book in the series, which I am really excited to read, but I have an even better opportunity for all of you! Read on…

Spoon or funnel
Dried lentils
Child’s sock
Rubber band
Ribbon
Scissors
Felt
White pom-pom or cotton ball
Tacky glue

Join the Design Squad for the 2010 Trash to Treasure Competition!

Parents and teachers, here’s a really cool contest for kids! In celebration of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, Design Squad (PBS’s award-winning series) is launching the nationwide 2010 Trash to Treasure competition on April 5th at PBSKIDSGO.org/designsquad/contest. Following the success of last year’s inaugural Trash to Treasure contest, kids across the country, ages 5-19, are once again challenged to recycle, reuse and re-engineer everyday materials into new inventions. Three young innovators will win a trip to Boston to see their designs built and have the process chronicled for an upcoming episode of the engineering TV series.

The invention should fit within one of the three categories: move things or people (Mobility), protect the environment (Environmental), or be used for indoor or outdoor play (Play). The invention also needs to be made of at least two repurposed materials (such as fabric, paper, plastic, small electronics, wheels, clamps, springs, batteries, hardware, wood, bike parts, string, rubber bands, cardboard, kitchen gadgets, etc.). Kids will be given online tools to sketch out their ideas or upload a photo. (Kids don’t need to actually build their invention in order to enter.)

Check out this awesome video of last year’s winner, Max Wallack, 13, who invented the “Home Dome,” a temporary shelter for homeless people and disaster victims. (Email subscribers may need to click on the title of this post to access the video on my blog.)

Three winners will be selected from this year’s entrants to go to Boston to work side-by-side with the team at the award-winning global innovation design consultancy Continuum and see their idea come to life. At Continuum, their winning designs will be prototyped, and the process will be chronicled by the team behind Design Squad. Their stories will be shared with a national audience on an upcoming episode of the Design Squad series and website PBSKIDSGO.org/designsquad. Twenty-five finalists will have their ideas showcased on the series website. The nationwide contest is open for ages 5-19 and will launch online on April 5. Entries will be accepted through September 5, 2010 at PBSKIDSGO.org/designsquad/contest.

If you know a creative kid or a young inventor, this is a great opportunity for them to help people and/or the environment and achieve great things!

Fool Your Kids on April Fools’ Day with a Fakin’ and Eggs Breakfast!

I love this idea from Disney FamilyFun for tricking your kids on April Fools' Day. It’s a breakfast that's really a cleverly disguised dessert! For more April Fools’ Day tomfoolery, visit http://familyfun.go.com/april-fools-day/.

Fakin’ and Eggs

Ingredients

FOR THE EGGS:

• 3 tablespoons white chocolate chips
• 12 yellow M&Ms

FOR THE FAKIN':

• 1 square caramel
• 1 Tootsie Roll Midgee

Instructions

1. For the eggs: Melt the white chocolate chips according to the package directions. Transfer the melted chocolate to a ziplock bag and snip off a corner.

2. Squeeze nickel-size portions of the chocolate onto a sheet of waxed paper, then gently press a yellow M&M, letter side down, into the center of each. Let the candies cool. Makes 12 eggs.

3. For the fakin': Remove the wrapping from a square caramel and a Tootsie Roll Midgee. Microwave the candies for 4 seconds to make them soft. Use your thumb and forefinger to slightly flatten each candy piece, then press them together.

4. Halve the candy, then stack and press the pieces into alternating layers.

5. Slice a 1/4-inch-wide piece from the stack. Pinch and stretch the piece lengthwise into a flat bacon strip, then cut it in half. Add ripples to each half by gently bending the edges. Makes 3 strips (6 pieces).

Join PUR in the Movement to Provide Safe Drinking Water Worldwide (and Win a PUR Sigg Water Bottle!)

Did you know that millions of people around the world lack access to clean drinking water? That’s why a portion of the proceeds from the sales of PUR water filtration systems are donated to help fund the Children’s Safe Drinking Water (CSDW) Program. This program has helped educate people on the importance of clean water and distributed PUR water purification packets -- an innovation that easily turns contaminated H2O into safe, drinkable water.

Here in the United States, most of us have access to clean drinking water. However, PUR wants you to know that traces of pharmaceutical drugs -- such as hormones, antibiotics, antidepressants, anti-anxiety medication and painkillers -- have been found in US drinking water. PUR’s water filtration products are designed to reduce the pharmaceutical compounds and other contaminants that might show up in your tap water. Best of all, when you purchase a PUR system, you’re not only improving your own water quality, but that of people around the world through the CSDW Program. For every product sold, 10 liters of clean water will be donated to help save lives.

Visit www.PURwater.com to learn more about PUR’s water filtration products, as well as their efforts to provide safe drinking water around the world through CSDW.

My New Favorite Snack: DOVE Milk Chocolate with Peanut Butter!

I have to admit that I have a weakness for chocolate. I keep a stash in my desk drawer, and when I need a little pick-me-up, I reach for a piece! So, when Mom Central asked if I’d be willing to sample the new DOVE Milk Chocolate with Peanut Butter, there was no hesitation! First, it’s chocolate. Second, it’s DOVE, which makes some of the best chocolate ever. And, third, it’s chocolate with peanut butter -- a wondrous combination! Needless to say, the DOVE Milk Chocolate with Peanut Butter did not disappoint!

My college-aged son is also a big fan of chocolate and peanut butter, so we were battling over the samples. How many chores could I get him to do, I asked myself, in exchange for a DOVE Milk Chocolate with Peanut Butter? Yes, I am a mean mom! We were both drooling over this delicious candy and doing all we could to hide it from my six-year-old twins. (I told you I was mean, didn’t I?)

If you’re a fan of DOVE chocolate, you know what I’m talking about when I say it’s the best. If you’re one of the few people who haven’t tried DOVE chocolate yet, you’ve got to get to the store right now! (There’s plenty of DOVE chocolate to be found in all the Easter displays!) And I suggest you start with the incredibly yummy DOVE Milk Chocolate with Peanut Butter. (If you’re also a dark chocolate fan like me, DOVE makes some amazing dark chocolate varieties, as well.)

Thank you, Mom Central, for arranging for me to get my Easter present early! However, I’m afraid that our DOVE Milk Chocolate with Peanut Butter is not going to make it until Easter. I guess I’ll just have to head out for another bag (or two, or three…)!

Hope for Families with Challenging Teens: The Total Transformation Program

I was recently given the opportunity to review a very comprehensive program for parents who are struggling with defiant, obnoxious, even abusive teenagers. It’s called The Total Transformation Program, by James Lehman, MSW. Lehman’s background makes him the perfect person to counsel families with teenagers. He was also a troubled teen, who quit school, abused drugs, and even spent time in prison. During his incarceration, he was ordered to participate in a program that showed him the wisdom in taking responsibility for his own actions. It literally transformed his life. He went on to earn his master’s in social work, and has been working with hundreds of parents for the past 30 years, teaching them how to develop effective parenting strategies for managing their teens’ challenging behaviors.

One thing I love about Lehman’s program (which I’ll describe more in a minute) is that he reassures parents with troubled teens that they are not bad parents. When our children don’t behave in ways they should, it’s normal to blame ourselves. And our kids are very good at helping us do this! But, ultimately, kids are responsible for their own behavior. And this is something they need to learn if they’re going to succeed in life. Even kids who are diagnosed with disabilities, such as ADHD, need to understand that they will no longer be able to use this diagnosis as a crutch when they enter the “real world.” Therefore, it’s extremely important that we, as parents, learn effective skills for helping our kids to hold themselves accountable for their behavior and ultimately function as responsible adults. Another benefit, of course, is a more peaceful home and a more loving relationship with our kids.

The Total Transformation Program, published by Legacy Publishing Company, is comprised of an introductory Jump Start DVD, a series of 7 audio lessons on CD, a Parent’s Workshop DVD, and a Workbook. Parents are advised to take it a step at a time by doing one lesson each week in the order in which they’re provided. In this way, parents really have the time to absorb and practice each lesson, as well as build on each one as they move on to the next. One of the best things about this program is that it’s highly practical. It’s not a bunch of theories and psychological jargon. It actually tells parents exactly what to do in a given situation. It describes precisely what you should say and do for almost every problem you will encounter with a defiant, oppositional child.

You can try The Total Transformation Program free for 30 days (just pay shipping) so you can be sure this is the right program for your family. And along with your purchase, you may request professional coaching and support via phone for just $1 for the first 30 days if you feel overwhelmed with your child’s behavior problems, have a question about implementing the program, or just need a listening ear.

I am very impressed with The Total Transformation Program. Lehman’s techniques are simple to understand, practical and doable, and have been effective for many families. Of course, everyone is different, and there’s no guarantee that The Total Transformation Program will turn your struggling teen around, but you have the potential to gain so much if this program works for you. If you’re fed up with parenting your difficult teenager and don’t know where to turn, I encourage you to check out James Lehman’s Total Transformation Program.

Visit www.thetotaltransformation.com for more information, testimonies, and purchasing information.
