See Martina McBride in Concert and Receive a $5 Discount on Your Ticket!

MomSelect just notified me of a great opportunity to get together with your girlfriends and enjoy a night out! If you’re a country music fan like I am, you’ll definitely want to see Martina McBride on her SunnyD Shine All Night Tour! She’s touring with Trace Adkins—another awesome performer! Check out this video, which features her new hit single, "Wrong Baby Wrong.” (Email subcribers: Please click on the title of this post to access the video on my blog.)

I’ve always loved Martina McBride. I have several of her CDs. And she’s a working mom, like me, who struggles to juggle the demands of parenthood and her career. She’s an inspiration to all of us as she pursues her dreams and still finds time to be a great mom.

BONUS:

MomSelect and Martina are offering a FIVE DOLLAR DISCOUNT on each ticket to see her SunnyD Shine All Night Tour! Just go to www.ShineAllNight.com, find your closest show and, when you are checking out, enter the code "MOMS" (without the quotation marks) to get your discount.

Unfortunately for me, it looks like I missed her one Florida show, but she’s still touring until May, so I encourage you to visit www.ShineAllNight.com to see if she’s going to be near you!

Three Cups: Teaching Children How to Save, Spend and Be Charitable with Money (Review and Giveaway)

Teaching kids about money and finances should start as early as possible. So many teenagers and adults are ignorant about financial matters because nobody ever sat down with them and taught them how to balance a checkbook, invest their money, use credit cards wisely, negotiate loans, and more. That’s why it’s so important that we begin talking to children about money management at a young age. Of course, the discussion must be age-appropriate. You don’t need to be discussing the pros and cons of various stock options to a four-year-old. However, there are plenty of ways you can start teaching your children about money even in preschool.

One great way is through the book, Three Cups, by Mark St. Germain (and illustrated by April Willy). It’s the story of a little boy who received a very unusual present for his fifth birthday. His gift was three ordinary coffee cups from the cupboard and an envelope with a small allowance. The little boy’s parents explained that, whenever he received money, he should divide it among the three cups, which were allotted for savings, spending, and charity. Of course, the little boy wasn’t too thrilled about his gift at first. But as the days, weeks and years passed, he learned fascinating concepts, like how the money he saved in the bank accrued interest! And that the money set aside for charity could do great things for people, which made him feel good, too. And, of course, the spending money could be combined to buy things he wanted for himself. When he graduated from high school, he was able to use the money in his savings account to help pay for college! Three Cups also includes a Parent’s Guide at the end of the book to explain how to implement the “Three Cups” system with your children.

Three Cups is a beautifully written story that entertains children, but teaches, too. My six-year-old twins really enjoyed reading this book and were very intrigued by the “Three Cups” system of money management. Since many people are facing money difficulties right now, this might even be a good system for all members of the family to share in together! It’s a gentle way to talk to kids about how times are tough without scaring them because this system empowers them to do something about it.

Visit www.3cupsbook.com to view a lovely video with pages from Three Cups. You can also order this beautiful hardcover book through Amazon (see link below) and other national book retailers. I highly recommend it.

Walmart Wants to Hear from You!

Walmart has asked mom bloggers to help spread the word that they’d like to hear from moms! They’ve developed a very basic and quick survey, which is easy to fill out. Even better, the results that come from it are going to be presented in a Walmart officers’ meeting! This is Walmart’s way of trying to listen to their customers because your opinions and feedback matter to them.

I just took the survey myself and it took me less than a minute. It’s anonymous and just asks 7 questions about your experiences at Walmart. If you could take a moment to fill it out before Friday (when the meeting takes place), Walmart would greatly appreciate it. This is your unique chance to reach the ears of Walmart’s officers!

Just go to http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/WHHX8LY to fill out the Walmart survey.

Banquet Is Celebrating 50 Years of Business with Its “Thanks a Million” Giveaway!

Banquet frozen meals have been around for a long time – 50 years, in fact! I remember eating them as a kid, and now I still have them in the freezer for those times when we need a quick and easy meal. There are so many varieties that I can always find something for everyone in my family.

This past weekend, I heated up Banquet frozen entrees for my six-year-old boys. They thoroughly enjoyed the chicken fingers, macaroni and cheese, and brownies. I gave them a side dish of carrots, and it was a full meal. They gobbled everything up!

I also keep Banquet frozen meals on hand for those days when I’m feeling overworked and just want a quick lunch. My favorite is the Macaroni & Cheese Meal. I’ve always been a big fan of mac and cheese, and the Banquet variety is delicious. I also had the Chicken Fried Beef Steak Meal recently and ate every bite of the mashed potatoes with country-style gravy, corn, and beef patty. Yum!

Banquet wants to thank all of its customers for 50 years of loyalty by giving away more than $1 million worth of redeemable cash prizes! Wow! Just look for the Banquet frozen dinner meals with the “Thanks a Million” logo on the box. Inside, you’ll find a game piece that could be worth anywhere from $10 to $100,000 or it might be a Banquet coupon!

Visit www.BanquetThanksaMillion.com to learn more about Banquet’s Thanks a Million event. And be sure to look for the Thanks a Million logo on boxes of Banquet frozen entrees in the freezer section of your local grocery store! Enjoy!

DISCLOSURE: I wrote this review while participating in a blog campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Banquet and received a sample to facilitate my candid review. Mom Central sent me a gift card to thank me for taking the time to participate.

What Will the Future Hold?

Your beginnings will seem humble, so prosperous will your future be (Job 8:7).

I love the Bible verse above. After all, we all come from humble beginnings. We are born into this world as helpless infants. Although we are endowed with certain genes, temperaments and talents, our future is essentially a blank slate. God certainly has a plan for our lives, and yet we have the free will to accept God’s plan or to follow a different path.

People love to ask children what they want to be when they grow up, as if a child really has a clear picture of what his future holds. Most kids will say they want to be a fireman or a ballerina, but most of them can’t even imagine the directions in which God will lead them or where they will choose to go. As a child, I certainly never envisioned that I would be a writer or a mother of four, and yet here I am on this exciting journey, clearly a gift from God.

As parents, it’s natural to wonder what our children’s lives will be like. Will they play sports? Excel in school? Go to college? Have a family? How often I’ve heard from one of my sons, “Mommy, I’m a big boy now!” My boys don’t want to be called “babies.” They can’t wait to forge headlong into their futures, to experience the perceived advantages of adulthood and move past the limitations that are placed upon them in childhood.

If only I could impress upon them the speed at which life passes. I want them to capture the memory of every moment, which is gone with the bat of an eye. I want them to enjoy the delights of childhood, the carefree days in which they abide. I want to spare them the growing pains that we all experience as we travel farther and farther on our life’s path. I want to tell my children not to rush to get to the future, for they may miss the lessons they’re meant to learn along the way and the joys they’re meant to experience.

But it’s difficult to impart a lesson to my children that I’m still learning myself. As an adult and a mother, I often take life very seriously. I forget to play, to relax, to savor the moments with my children. I rush from one thing to the next, one activity to another. I spend so much time guessing what the future holds that I forget that God’s gift of the present is the only thing that’s certain.

As parents, the present may be filled with chaos, challenges and responsibilities. It is rarely a peaceful or predictable life. It’s probably not the life we imagined we would be living. The joys, the trials, the love, the agony—all are gifts to be savored. We are not to worry about the future, but embrace today. Trust that God will continue to guide our steps and those of our children. Relax in the moment, knowing that He will lead the way.

Jingles for Juveniles: Readeez DVDs and CDs (Giveaway!)

It’s difficult to describe Readeez songs and videos because they’re so unique! The best way for me to describe them – and I’m probably not the first to come up with this name – is that they are “Jingles for Juveniles.” My kids love them!

They’re short songs (for short attention spans) but kids can also see the words, syllable by syllable, which helps them to read! Watch the following videos to see what I mean. (Email subscribers may need to click on the title of this post to access the videos on my blog.) Following are my boys’ two favorite Readeez songs.

Watermelon

How ‘Bout That Cow

My boys love these tunes. We have a Readeez CD and DVD, and they ask me to play them over and over again in the car. On our way to school, I hear from the back seat, “Mommy, play the cow song!” Go to www.readeez.com to watch more Readeez videos and order a DVD or CD. You can also visit Readeez on Facebook at www.facebook.com/Readeez.

GIVEAWAY

I have been authorized to give away a Readeez Volume Two DVD and CD to one lucky family! To enter, go to http://readeez.com/watch.html and watch some of the videos. Come back here and leave a comment with the name of your favorite. (NOTE: You have to pick something besides “Watermelon” and “How ‘Bout That Cow,” even if you love them, too!) You must do this step to enter the giveaway.

Help Save Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) from Budget Cuts!

As a writer, literacy initiatives are near and dear to my heart. I want to do all I can to encourage kids to read and love it!

Since 1966, Reading Is Fundamental (RIF) has been providing free books to underprivileged children in hundreds of communities. Now this valuable and important program is being threatened.

President Obama’s 2011 proposed budget cuts Reading Is Fundamental, which receives 80% of its funding from the government. We can’t let this happen!

Currently, the organization is rallying parents, educators and the community with a “write your politician campaign” on the Internet. Already, thousands have offered their support.

Please go to www.rif.org and sign your name to save RIF.

Without federal funding, more than 4.4 million children and families will not receive free books or reading encouragement from RIF programs. What a huge loss that would be for so many children!

Please sign the petition today!

Skin MD: A Natural Skin Care Breakthrough (Discount Code and Giveaway)

I’ve never been a big fan of traditional moisturizers. My skin has been on the oily side for most of my life, and I hate how heavy most moisturizers feel on my skin. But now that I’m in my mid-forties, I know how important it is to take good care of my skin.

So, I was really excited when I was contacted by a representative from Skin MD Natural and offered the chance to try their “shielding lotion” for face, hands and body. They call it a “shielding lotion” because it actually bonds to the outer layer of the skin, which creates a barrier against all of the toxins, pollutants and irritants in our environment that can dry out our skin and cause problems like eczema, psoriasis, acne and more.

Skin MD Natural Shielding Lotion contains natural ingredients such as aloe vera (an anti-inflammatory and healing agent), Arnica Montana (used for treating inflammation and bruising), chamomile (which is anti-inflammatory and antiseptic) and Vitamin E (an anti-oxidant). I’m all for natural products, but I also wanted to be sure that a) it works and b) it doesn’t feel heavy.

I’m happy to report that Skin MD passed both of my criteria for a great product for my skin. It makes my skin feel wonderful, and it’s the lightest lotion I’ve ever used! It’s so light that it barely feels like I’m putting on lotion, and just a little bit covers a large area. I really love the way my skin feels after putting on Skin MD. It doesn’t feel oily at all, just soft and smooth. And it has a really light, pleasant scent, which I like because I’m also not a fan of lotions with a heavy perfume smell. I’m really glad I was able to try Skin MD Natural Shielding Lotion, and I plan to continue using it in the future!

Skin MD Natural products are available in many stores (there’s a store locator on their website), as well as at www.skinmdnatural.com.

DISCOUNT - 20% OFF!

When you order from the Skin MD website at www.skinmdnatural.com, you can save 20% on your order by using the code: SMH. Just place your order and enter the code during the checkout process. They also offer free shipping on orders of $50 or more in the domestic United States. Stock up on Skin MD for the whole family!

GIVEAWAY

I’ve also been authorized to give away one full-sized bottle of Skin MD Natural Shielding Lotion to one lucky winner! To enter, visit www.skinmdnatural.com, and then return to this post and leave a comment about something you learned on the site that wasn’t mentioned in this review. It’s a wonderful, comprehensive site, so you won’t have any problem learning something new! You must do this to enter the giveaway.
