Book Review: Unstoppable in Stilettos, by Lauren Ruotolo

Unstoppable in Stilettos: A Girl's Guide to Living Tall in a Small World, by Lauren Ruotolo, is part autobiography, part self-help guide, part inspirational reading. Lauren’s wisdom comes from life as a four-foot-two-inches-tall woman on crutches, the result of a rare genetic disease called McCune-Albright syndrome. But being “labeled disabled” has never slowed Lauren down. In fact, it has made her even more determined to prove to the world that she can succeed on her own terms. Told as a child that she would always be wheelchair-bound, she proved everyone wrong by walking with just a set of crutches -- and in her signature stilettos! When she was told that her condition would prevent her from succeeding in the business world, Lauren proved the naysayers wrong again and now has a highly successful career in entertainment promotion for Hearst Magazines.

Lauren’s message throughout Unstoppable in Stilettos is: “If I can do all this, then you can, too!” I love how Lauren weaves anecdotes from her life with various life lessons. For example, the lesson of chapter 1 is: “It’s not how many steps are in front of you, it’s how you climb them.” In chapter 4, Lauren tells us: “Rejection can be your greatest ally and lead to your dreams.” (This was after more than 30 prospective employers rejected her after college.) Through it all, Lauren’s determination and spunk shine through. She just can’t be “brought down to size”!

If you’ve been feeling like you’re not good enough or that you don’t have what it takes to succeed, I recommend that you read Unstoppable in Stilettos. It will inspire you to see setbacks as steps forward and to keep fighting when it seems like nothing will ever go your way. This is a delightful and inspirational read from beginning to end.
