Book Review: Homework Made Simple, by Ann K. Dolin, M.Ed.

Do you ever feel like you’re a member of the “homework police”? That’s a term coined by Ann K. Dolin, M.Ed., after working with thousands of families in her role as teacher, tutor and business owner. Through her company, Educational Connections Inc., she has encountered every different kind of homework challenge imaginable, and now she has published a book to help families address the pitfalls of homework time.

Homework Made Simple: Tips, Tools, and Solutions for Stress-Free Homework “is for parents who have experienced stress, self-doubt, and anxiety over homework. It is for those who wonder if there is a better, easier way to help their children experience greater success in those precious after-school hours. And it is also for those who want to set up a good foundation for smooth sailing in later years.”

In the first part of the book, Dolin helps parents identify the REAL problem when it comes to homework hassles, explains how parenting styles affect homework, and gives pointers on what works for all kids. In part two, she gets more specific by employing strategies for kids who display certain characteristics, such as “The Disorganized,” “The Rusher,” “The Procrastinator,” and “The Easily Frustrated.” Part three offers troubleshooting ideas for improving study skills, handling difficult situations, and putting it all together. She answers questions such as “What if my child won’t let me help him?” and “She says she can’t focus without music. Should I allow her to listen?”

Homework Made Simple is chock-full of ideas and strategies for ending the homework battles at your house. Visit the author’s website at http://anndolin.com/ to learn more about her work and Homework Made Simple. This terrific book can be ordered through Amazon and other major booksellers.
