I’ve been eyeing eReaders for quite a while. As an author and avid reader, I have a real love for the printed book. My bookshelves, however, are shouting to me, “Enough!” See what I mean?
So, I knew the time was right to start reading my books electronically. However, my shoulders are stooped enough from leaning over my computer. I wanted something that gave me more of a real book-reading experience, something that enabled me to curl up in bed and read, without putting a hot laptop on my knees. The ideal solution is the nook from Barnes & Noble!
I am so excited about the nook! I’ve always been a huge fan of Barnes & Noble. I’m fortunate that I have one within walking distance of my house. So, I spend a lot of time there and faithfully renew my Member Card every year. Thus, it was a logical choice for me to want their new eReader, the nook.
There are so many cool features about the nook that I can’t possibly list them all here, but the following are some of my favorites.
I can download new books without even touching the computer. Once you’ve registered your nook and established an account with B&N, you can order books anytime right from the nook! (Of course, your nook needs to be connected to a wireless network.) You don’t even have to enter your payment information. Just search for the book you want and click to buy! A short time later, it shows up in your nook library. It’s that simple!
The nook is so portable that I can take it anywhere, just like a regular paperback. You can carry your nook with you in a bag or mid-sized purse (it’s really light) and have it ready anytime you’re waiting, such as at the doctor’s office. Just take it out and read! (Trust me, it’s much better than those two-year-old magazines in the pediatrician’s waiting room that are coated with germs!) I use my nook in the car while I’m waiting in car line for my kids to get out of school. I also read it in bed for some relaxation time before I go to sleep. The type is very easy on the eyes, and the size of the letters can be adjusted. There’s also no glare on the screen, so I can even read it at the beach or an outdoor sporting event! (You can also purchase an optional light if you like to read in the dark.)
They have a wide variety of accessories for the nook. I love this beautiful leather cover with a magnetic closure that I purchased for mine. It’s called the “Hutton Envelope in Bark.”
It is so classy! A large number of nook covers, device backs and frames are available so you can customize the look of your nook to fit your personality. With 2GB of memory, the nook stores up to 1,500 books, newspapers and magazines, but you can also purchase more memory if you wish. You can even store MP3 files on your nook to play music while you’re reading, upload your own photos to use as wallpaper, and view PDF files.
I also love the nook’s touch screen. I just touch the little “n” to bring the screen to life in the bottom section of my nook, and everything can be accessed from this area: my books and documents, settings, shopping and more. You can even view your book covers in color. A little keyboard pops up on the touch screen when you need to search for books, and then disappears when you’re done with it.
I love how the nook remembers where I left off when I quit reading. Whenever I begin reading again, it takes me right to the page where I was before! You can also manually insert bookmarks, highlight important text, and more.
Barnes & Noble also offers exclusive content for nook users. For instance, I downloaded their free Alice in Wonderland screen savers. I also got an electronic copy of the bestselling book, The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, for only $1.99! They’ll be featuring great deals and free items consistently for the nook.
The nook is new, so naturally Barnes & Noble will be adding terrific features in the future, which will be seamlessly updated to your nook as they become available. I listened to a B&N webinar about the nook last week, and they said they are paying a lot of attention to people’s requests for new features and are working on them. For example, many people have asked for the ability to organize their book titles into “folders” in their library. They may want to group their books into categories, such as Mysteries, Biographies, Romance, etc. So, that feature will hopefully be available soon. They’re also adding more electronic books all the time. More than a million books are already available, and all of the books that I requested were there. People have requested a greater selection of children’s books and magazines, which they’re working on. And they’re also investigating the acquisition of textbooks for students. So, there are some exciting new features coming up!
