Introducing the Shandle Toilet Seat Handle! (Giveaway)

When I was contacted about trying out a product called the Shandle, I knew it was a perfect fit for my family. I’ll try not to gross you out here, but let’s just say that with five guys in the house, including five-year-old twins with extremely poor aim, our toilet seat is about as gross as it can get. I clean it and clean it, but in no time, it’s “splashed” again. Disgusting! So, when I was told that there’s now a product that helps cut down on germs, I was eager to try it.

The Shandle is a plastic handle treated with antimicrobial protection that attaches under the toilet seat and sticks out on the side. When a child (or adult) wants to lift up the toilet seat, he can grab the Shandle instead of directly handling the underside of the (splattered) toilet seat. Also, each Shandle has a really cute picture on it with words that remind kids to wash their hands afterward. There is a large selection of designs, most targeted to appeal to boys, like robots, animals and monsters. But their decorative designs will appeal to people who want a more sophisticated look.

The sample I received has a cute little frog that says, “Frog Washes His Hands.” I think it would have been a little better if the picture actually showed Frog washing his hands, since my boys aren’t reading yet, but I told them what it says. The Shandle is extremely easy to install. You just wash the underside of the seat, peal the covering from the foam adhesive strip, and press it into the proper position (as shown in a very clear drawing on the package). It’s best to let the adhesive adhere for about 24 hours so that it will support the weight of both the seat and the lid.

Now, here’s the big question. Will kids use it? Well, I don’t know about your kids, but my boys do! I must admit, I had my doubts, but they really do grab the handle to lift the seat now. And here’s the bigger bonus in my book: They’re more likely to put the toilet seat and lid down after using the toilet because they want to use the handle again! That’s a big plus for me because I hate looking into a toilet. I like to have the seat down. The only downside I saw was that when my kids lifted the seat by the Shandle, the cover tended to bang into the back of the toilet if they did it too quickly. If you have some kind of soft cover on your toilet seat lid, that won’t be a problem. You can also try teaching your children to lift the seat more gently so there’s no banging.

I’m sorry that I didn’t film my kids using the Shandle, but I didn’t think they’d appreciate it when they got older and found pictures of themselves on the Internet getting ready to use the toilet! However, here’s a brief video supplied by the company that shows the Shandle in action.

Overall, I’m very pleased with the Shandle. It’s getting a lot of use in our house, and it’s only $6.99, which includes free shipping! That price makes it very affordable to get a Shandle for every toilet in your house. Go to www.theshandle.com to learn more about this terrific product and place an order.
