With all three of my pregnancies, the book, What to Expect When You’re Expecting, was constantly in my hands. I consulted it all the time about the various pregnancy symptoms I was experiencing, the changes my developing babies were undergoing, and the tests I would be having. It’s one of the most comprehensive resources available for pregnant women and their partners. Since then, author Heidi Murkoff has published a whole line of books in her What to Expect series. And, most recently, she teamed up with Clorox to write a free 16-page guide for parents called the What to Expect Guide to a Healthy Home. This guide is chock-full of tips for helping to keep your home clean and healthy for your family.
Heidi’s opening line seemed to speak right to me: “Here’s some good news that might surprise you: Your house is probably a lot cleaner than you think (and than your mother always seems to be telling you).” As a mother of four, I love to hear that reassurance! Most of us, at one time or another, wonder if we’re doing all we can to keep up with the dirt and germs in the house. Heidi goes on to tell us that “A few preventative measures and a dose of common sense is all it takes to help keep your home and family healthier. It’s easier than you think (and a lot easier than your mother would like you to believe) -- and it’s all here in this guide.”
In Part I: Keeping Your House Healthy, Heidi takes us through the bedroom, the bathroom, the playroom and the kitchen to point out ways in which we can make things cleaner and healthier. Allergens, food safety, and the spread of germs are key topics. In Part 2: Healthy Habits for Your Family, Heidi talks about hand washing (I love her tips on encouraging reluctant kids to wash up!), fighting the flu, battling germs in public places (like public bathrooms…ewww!), and child care centers. She even addresses the “three-second rule”: If something hits the ground but is picked up within three seconds, is it safe for your child?
I found the What to Expect Guide to a Healthy Home to be full of very practical and easy-to-use information. It made me feel better about not being a perfect housekeeper and provided tips that even a reluctant cleaner like me can adopt. And, best of all, it’s FREE! The tips in this guide cover your child from birth to age 5. The last page of the guide is a great print-out for moms to post on the refrigerator or distribute to playgroup members for quick tips.
