Life to the Max: Book Review and Giveaway

When an Airedale Terrier named Max entered the household of Robin Reynolds, he quickly made himself at home and taught Robin and her family many life lessons. In Life to the Max: Maxims for a Great Life by a Dog Named Max, Max narrates his own life (with the help of his “mom” Robin), from his adoption at the Humane Society to his eventual death. He describes his adventures with Bernie, the family’s other Airedale, along with Amber, the puppy they adopted after Bernie’s death. Max also “writes” about the adoption of his human brother, Andrew, as well as the many trials he goes through, such as melanoma and amputation, getting picked up by Animal Control, and the physical problems associated with aging. Through it all, Max always maintains his sunny disposition and teaches his family many “maxims,” such as:

When bad things happen, worrying won’t change anything. Trust you’ll get through it.
Trust that you’ll meet just the right people at just the right time.
Get the most out of life by doing things you enjoy!
Help someone else by sharing the gift of you.
No matter what happens, there are reasons to be happy and grateful.
Never miss a chance to tell those closest to you that you love them.
…And much more!

Life to the Max is extremely well-written and filled with beautiful photos of Max with his canine and human companions. Best of all, this book appeals to everyone, both children and adults. Not only is it inspirational, but it can be read to children to stimulate family conversations about caring for pets, illness, friendship, adoption, aging, and death. It’s not surprising that this book was named Best Gift Book in the 2008 AZ Book Awards and received an Award of Excellence from the Dog Writer Association of America. Twenty-five percent of the book’s sale price is donated to animal rescue organizations. Visit www.lifetomax.com to learn more about Life to the Max and order a copy for all the animal lovers in your life!

  1. Our yellow lab Scooter is my favorite 4 legged creature. He can be so silly at times, and he doesn't always seem to be the brightest dog but we love him anyway.

  2. My english black lab Shadow makes us laugh everyday. He knows what we are talking about, even when we spell different words. If we spell blue he knows it's his toy and we are going out to play. He is my fishing buddy, I haul him in the the truck on warm mornings and he keeps me company.

  3. My cat Razzy was my all time favorite pet. He was all black and a prince of cats.

  4. We have three dogs but I have to say that Bo, my oldest, is my secret favorite. He has more issues than Time Magazine but that dog worships the ground I walk on. When I come home after work, the other two dogs have to run outside but not Bo. He's the dog that has to spend five minutes saying hello to me before he goes outside to do his business. He does the same thing, though, when I take out the trash..acts like he hasn't seen me in forever.

  10. It would probably be a tie between my two cats. Whenever I am in severe pain they pick up on it and try to comfort me. They always make me smile.

  32. I grew up with my older brother being a Veterinarian. Our family has an innate love of animals! When my husband and I got engaged, we adopted an orphan puppy through my brother's connections. Kayleigh was our first child and she died not long before her 19th birthday! It has been almost 5 years and I still miss her! Now, our family has a Beagle puppy rescued from a puppy mill and she is wonderful. Many thanks, Cindi

  44. Christina - xristya@rock.com - My favorite pet has turned out to be, surprisingly, my inherited German Shepherd - Husky mix dog named Birdie (I had never wanted to have a dog in the city but could not give away the dog who was my mother's companion for the last years of her life!). I love Birdie because she's sweet, intelligent and loyal, and because she really loves ME!

  48. Scooter is our huge yellow lab; not fat, you see, but muscular and tall. My youngest son had wanted a yellow lab since I can remember. He had also picked out his name. In 3rd grade they had a project to make a scene out of clay for pet day. My son made a yellow lab and a dog house with the name Scooter over the door. Well, it wasn't long after that that Scooter was welcomed into our home, such a cute tiny puppy with a knack for trouble. When Marley and Me came out I swore Scooter was Marley's reincarnation.
